JOB SUMMARY : Responsible for the ReBuild Detroit (RBD) apprenticeship readiness program instruction by utilizing a variety of teaching techniques to instruct students in the building trades’ curriculum.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Provide initial academic assessments to identify participant’s learning styles.
- Provide a vocational educational class that teaches the building trades, including demolition, framing, interior work, blueprint reading, etc.

- Follow curriculum and instruct on all building trades areas. Provides recommendations and updates curriculum based on employer feedback.
- Teach the proper use and handling of all hand tools, power tools, and equipment.
- Assists in coordinating and supervising hands-on projects on and offsite.
- Monitors assignments and assessment techniques; provides feedback and recommendations.
- Assist in the development of job opportunities for trainees in conjunction with other staff and, where appropriate, assist trainees in setting career goals.
- Provide regular communications with the program services manager on participant progress and other issues.
- Conducts regular assessments and tracks the academic progress of participants as defined by the funding source.
- Utilizes a variety of teaching resources to develop student’s knowledge of the subject area.
- Ensures that participant records with documentation of attendance and other relevant information, as required by SER and the program-funding source are kept.
- Serves as a mentor to student cohort members.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS :
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Minimum of journey-level experience or three years of experience as a certified teacher in a construction training program required.
- An OSHA 10-Hour (Hazard Recognition Training for the Construction Industry) certificate is preferred.
- Licensed contractor with demonstrated experience in construction management preferred.
- Two to three years of instruction or training experience with at-risk youth or in an adult basic education program.
- Bilingual language skills in English / Spanish are preferred.
- Operating procedures, laws, materials, and safety measures that apply to construction.
- Proficient construction trades math skills.
- Mental ability to handle pressures related to dealing with multiple individuals from diverse backgrounds and varying levels of need.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to instruct program participants in an interesting, clear and concise manner.

The employee may need to lift and / or move 20-25 pounds, and occasionally lift and / or move 35-50 pounds.

This job operates in a normal school environment with a noise level, which is at times, moderately loud with little discomfort due to noise, dirt, dust and the like.
This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
