MEDICAL ASSISTANT
Salary : 107 $28,501.00 per year.
SECTION I-JOB DESCRIPTION
SUMMARY :
Under the supervision of the Clinic Coordinator or designee. The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) will assist the clinical services staff with daily duties for the Cameron County Public Health (CCPH) Clinical Services Program.
CMA will perform clerical and clinical work for the Clinical Services Program that is critical to the development of the medical and financial records of the clinics.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
- Employee will accurately document all time worked.
- Performs functions and render services consistent and adhering with established Cameron County Public Health Policies and Procedures, Clinical Services Program Policies and Procedures, Standing Delegation Orders and Protocols.
- Adheres and completes the Medical Assistant Employee Competency Checklist.
- Interviews client and / or guardian to obtain appropriate health history and or immunization status of client who will be rendered services.
- Prepares and administers immunizations and treatments consistent with CCPH protocols and procedures.
- Conducts data entry on clients seen during clinic visits in records and electronic reporting systems as required for Family Planning, STD, Prenatal, and Immunizations.
- Responsible for maintaining and documenting appropriate medical records and reports.
- Responsible for planning and scheduling clinics in the department.
- Documents medically related notes in client records in an objective and subjective format.
- Performs screening laboratory tests and vital signs on clients as needed.
- Participates in the coordination of laboratory specimen collections with private and / or regional laboratories.
- Prepare equipment and supplies for all clinical sessions.
- Ensures that all abnormal results are routed to the LVN / RN / FNP / ANP / MD, as appropriate, with proper follow-up.
- Responsible for assisting in completing of monthly reports.
- Assists in Quarterly Quality Assurance Record Reviews and Quality Assurance Quarterly Medical Reviews.
- Make appropriate referrals to agencies as necessary to ensure client's medical needs are met.
- Assists in the management of epidemiological data gathering and analysis for vaccine preventable disease control and prevention as needed.
- Assists and is responsible for completing client refills.
- Responsible for meeting and greeting clients and directing them to the appropriate program
- Responsible for answering the telephone and greeting clients in a professional and courteous manner.
- Responsible for scheduling appointments for clients at the clinic.
- Responsible for ordering office and medical supplies for clinic.
- Responsible for maintaining and preparing records for Family Planning, STD, Prenatal, and Immunizations.
- Responsible for maintaining records and inputting data in orderly form and correct format with appropriate medical documents and progress notes
- Responsible for registering clients for Family Planning, STD, Prenatal, and Immunizations.
- Responsible for answering phone calls / faxes, pulling records for review by nurse / practitioner or physician or as needed by staff.
- Responsible for follow-ups with pending laboratory results.
- Responsible for transferring records to other clinics within departments.
- Route records back to staff nurses / practitioner if documentation is incomplete on client.
- Responsible for updating demographic and history at each patient encounter.

- Responsible for preparing clients for laboratory work and / or physical exam by the physician or nurse practitioner. Assist the with client's exam.
- Responsible for taking vital signs and measurements on clients seeking services in clinic.
- Responsible for completing work order on client as requested by physician or nurse practitioner.
- Completes laboratory specimen forms with client's name, date of birth and clinic address. Prepares specimens for mailing and sending specimens to appropriate laboratory.
- Responsible for keeping laboratory log up to date with specimens going out of the clinic and posting results from laboratory on log.
- Responsible for keeping supplies stocked for clinics and conducting monthly inventory of supplies on hand to order for the following month.
- Responsible for pulling records for scheduled clinics and reviewing records for completeness of forms prior to clinics date.
- Responsible to be able to perform all lab duties including but not limited to lab work (blood draw, urinalysis, finger stick, etc.
quality assurance of lab equipment, ensure that lab is stock at all times, calibration of equipment, etc.
Other duties as assigned.
SECTION II-JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :
Graduate from an accredited school of Medical Assistants and maintain current certification.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES :
Knowledge of medical terminology. Knowledge of public health laws and regulations. Knowledge of natural history of common infectious diseases.
Good communication skills (oral and written) and Spanish speaking ability. Knowledge of computer programs software (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and internet).
Ability to work with confidential client information. Ability to understand public health laws and regulations. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to work with public.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :
Must have a valid Texas Driver's License, comply with State of Texas Driving Laws, and maintain an acceptable driving record.
Must have reliable transportation. Employees of Cameron County may be required to work during any natural disaster or emergency, extended hours and non-traditional work schedules (i.
e., Saturdays and Sundays). Criminal background check is required for employment or continued employment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS :
Good health and physical condition sufficient to permit full performance of the duties of the position. If additional assistance is required, employee must request assistance prior to performing the assignment.

Occasional contact with other health, social and educational care agencies, outside organizations. Frequent contact with clinic clientele.
Communication is via telephone, written communication and face to face.
INTERNAL CONTACTS :
Utilizes tact when dealing with County employees, health, social and educational care providers, and clientele regarding operations issues.
Constant contact with County Personnel. Communicating is primarily face-to-face, via telephone and through written communication.
RESPONSIBILITY :
Comply with Cameron County and Department of State Health Services rules / regulations and display a positive public image.
As a Cameron County employee, the identity of every client shall be kept confidential except to the extent necessary to carry out the purpose of an investigation, hearing, or judicial proceeding.
DIFFICULTY :
Judgment is required to ensure completion of job activities as assigned by the Immediate Supervisor or designee. Uses discretion to achieve work goals.
Initiative is constantly required to achieve work goals.
GUIDANCE :
As assigned by Immediate Supervisor or designee. It is the responsibility of the employee to know and maintain contact with their Immediate Supervisor or designee.
WORKING CONDITION :
Working conditions are primarily in a clinic, office, or community center.
This position is subject to a six (6) month probationary period prior to Civil Service eligibility. Must submit to a Civil Service Clerical Exam.
