Water/Wastewater Engineer – Mid Level (Hybrid)

Summary :
Barr is seeking a water and wastewater engineer to join one of its various offices. This person will undertake challenging and progressive work focused on water and wastewater treatment facilities for industrial and municipal clients.
- Project responsibilities may include working as an individual or as part of a project team to assist with mass balance calculations;
- bench testing of physical, chemical or biological treatment unit operations; operation of pilot treatment systems; modeling of chemical and biological processes;
- conceptual and detailed engineering, including plans and specifications for construction of treatment systems; evaluation and troubleshooting of new or existing systems;
- and preparation of technical reports. Responsibilities may also include development of proposals, scopes of work, and budgets;
- communications, meetings, and negotiations with clients and regulatory agency personnel; internal team coordination and staff mentoring;
and overall project management. This job may require occasional out-of-town travel.
Minimum Qualifications :
Bachelor’s Degree in civil, environmental, or chemical engineering
Professional Engineer (PE) certification or eligible to become registered within a year
5 or more years of relevant work experience
Strong technical skills in a wide range of analysis and design related to water and wastewater engineering
Sound understanding of water chemistry and environmental microbiology
Exposure to work in a laboratory setting such as bench scale testing and wastewater analysis
Exposure to treatment system operations
Demonstrates problem solving skills and ability to work through ambiguity
Demonstrates interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with project team members, regulators, and clients
Demonstrates effectiveness in building working relationships and leading and working with multidisciplinary teams
Demonstrates task management and project organizational skills
Willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedules to meet project needs
Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship
Acceptable driving record
Preferred Qualifications :
Master’s Degree in civil, environmental, or chemical engineering
Engineering knowledge and experience with industrial manufacturing processes, such as petroleum refining and mining, and water treatment for industrial uses, such as cooling water and boiler feed
Engineering knowledge and experience with treatment of contaminants of emerging concern, such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)
Experience with engineering plans and specifications, equipment selection, and cost estimating
Drinking water or wastewater treatment operator’s license
A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office.
This position can be based out of Barr's Ann Arbor, MI; Grand Rapids, MI; Duluth, MN; Jefferson City, MO; Hibbing, MN; Salt Lake City, UT;
Bismarck, ND; or Minneapolis, MN offices.
NOTE : Some work locations may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and may also require entering and working in facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities.
Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required.
Safety training will be provided. Applicants may be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of specific clients.
