Under direct supervision of the Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician is responsible for preparation of medications, record keeping and inventory control.

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Prepare medication orders by compounding or admixing medications under a pharmacist's supervision.
  • Under direct supervision of a pharmacist, check all orders for completeness of information, verify patient information, and review laboratory values.
  • Under a pharmacist's supervision, admix drugs as ordered by physician in an accurate and timely manner as per department guidelines, and prepare all drugs within CARTI policies and procedures for aseptic technique and handling hazardous drugs.
  • Calculate correct dosage volumes, converting between metric and apothecary equivalents.
  • Maintain inventory of patient and sample medications.
  • Count controlled drugs daily and maintain records.
  • Properly dispose of all materials used when mixing chemo or non-chemo IV's.
  • Clean hood daily as stated in policy and procedures.
  • Check drugs monthly for outdates.
  • Keep accurate temperature logs when needed.
  • Keep accurate logs on all protocol drugs and patient assistance drugs.
  • Maintain complete inventory control of medications, assuring proper inventory levels. Order supplies and medications. Receive and shelve medications.

Ensure that standard drug supplies are in adequate supply in all departments.

  • Prepare labels. Have a thorough understanding of department automation, data entry, and report generation.
  • Complete all initial and annual training and testing as required. Know and follow CARTI policies and procedures.

OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS : May be required to travel to satellite clinics.

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, LICENSURE and REGISTRATION :

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Arkansas State Board of Pharmacy Technician License required.

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES :

  • At least 1 year experience in a pharmacy preferred.
  • IV compounding skills preferred.
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical and related medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of metric and apothecary systems of weights and measurements.
  • Knowledge of medical safety standards to assist in manufacturing and working with pharmaceutical substances.
  • Knowledge of medications and the dispensing function to check for correctness.
  • Ability to read and interpret prescription information.
  • Advanced knowledge of aseptic technique.
  • Understands and demonstrates aseptic techniques and procedures.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

REASONING ABILITY :

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS :

  • Must interact and communicate both verbally and in written form.
  • Must interact and exchange information regarding patients with physicians, other departmental Team Members, and outside agencies on a frequent basis while respecting the confidentiality of patient information.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.

This position involves potential exposure to infectious diseases. Team Members are offered appropriate vaccinations and safety training.
