Research Assistant or Associate Professor (Appointment Stream)

The Department of Health Policy & Management and the Health Policy Institute at the University of Pittsburgh are seeking a health policy researcher for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Research Assistant or Research Associate Professor (Appointment Stream) to conduct Medicaid policy research.

The successful candidate will conduct timely, policy-relevant research to inform key policy decisions surrounding the organization and financing of the state's Medicaid program.

Candidates should have an understanding of the populations served by Medicaid as well as expertise in one or more of the following Medicaid policy areas : eligibility and enrollment systems, financing and reimbursement, access to care, and federal regulations governing the program.

Candidates will be expected to have expertise with quantitative or qualitative methods in applied policy work; excellent verbal and written communication skills;

and experience working in a collaborative research environment.

The individual filling this position will be expected to conduct rigorous policy analyses in a team-based environment and report on those analyses to government officials and professional audiences, as well as summarize the results of analyses for peer-reviewed publication.

Funding for this position is supported by a contract with the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services.

Qualifications

The successful applicant will demonstrate a commitment to research on Medicaid Policy, working collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team of researchers, and coordinating with state policy makers.

Preferred qualifications include :

A doctoral degree in public health, health policy, or a related field or a terminal professional master's degree (e.g., MHA, MPH, JD) plus 10 or more years of professional experience in policy development, implementation, or analysis.

Candidates with training in the following fields are encouraged to apply : (1) health policy; (2) health economics; (3) health services research, (4) public administration;

or (5) public health.

Expertise leading innovative research using health services research methods focused on advancing public health and health policy.

A commitment to advance the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in public health.

Enthusiasm for collaborative work to translate research findings to policy decisions.

Position Requirements at the Assistant Professor level include :

A track record of peer-reviewed publications in public health, health policy, or clinical journals appropriate to the career stage.

For those currently completing doctoral studies, this includes research working papers or publications in process.

Position requirements at the Associate Professor level include :

  • Significant contributions to or leadership of peer-reviewed publications in public health, health policy, or clinical journals appropriate to career stage.
  • A track record of consistent extramural research funding support, as co-investigator or principal investigator.
  • National or regional recognition of research accomplishments by peers.
  • Experience in service to the profession (e.g., service in national organizations, journal editorial boards, or grant review committees).

Environment

A member of the Association of Schools of Public Health, the School of Public Health (SPH) has over 600 students, 200 full-time faculty members, and more than 300 staff members, SPH is located in the heart of Pittsburgh's healthcare district and in close proximity to the University of Pittsburgh's other five health sciences schools and the main Pittsburgh campus.

Housed within the SPH, the Health Policy Institute (HPI) partners with foundations, stakeholder organizations, and government to apply objective, scientific methods to the key challenges facing our health system.

Since 1980, HPI teams have conducted applied interdisciplinary research across the life and social sciences. The goal of our work is to improve the well-being of the population through research-informed health policy that reflects the best scientific evidence available.

HPM Faculty lead or collaborate with research centers across the University, including the Medicaid Research Center , Center for Women's Health Research and Innovation , Hillman Cancer Center , Center for Bioethics and Health Law , Center for Research on Health, and Center for Pharmaceutical Prescribing and Policy .
