Classification : Exempt

Location : Evanston, IL

This position is designated as Hybrid Fixed Days and will regularly work in the office an average of 3+ days a week with a set schedule.

Managers may require team members to work on the same schedule to encourage collaboration.

Rotary is under the jurisdiction of Illinois employment laws; we require all employees to live within reasonable daily commuting distance to Evanston.

Overview

Rotary International is seeking a Director of Content Strategy to direct content creation and distribution across the communications channels to build Rotary’s brand and attract members and supporters.

The role oversees the Rotary Media Center which includes the key internal and external communications channels - the Rotary magazine, rotary.

org, social media and media relations.

The Director of Content Strategy must possess a strong journalism or communications background and an understanding of communicating with a diverse, global audience.

The successful candidate will have overseen print and digital communications vehicles and have previous experience managing creative and development teams to produce inspiring, informative and effective content.

In addition, the director will work with other communications areas to develop an effective content approach for all Rotary’s communications platforms and the organization’s overall communications plan to support brand building efforts.

You Will Have

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field required.
  • A graduate degree in a similar field is highly desirable.
  • More than 15 years experience in journalism, content marketing or related field.
  • At least ten years of content management experience is required.
  • Experience directing strategy, approach and content for multimedia platforms.
  • Substantial experience working for a global media, corporate or non-profit organization.
  • Knowledge and skills communicating to global audiences, as well as in a constituent, membership, or association environment preferred.
  • Ability to speak multiple languages preferred, but not required.

  • Ability to understand diverse cultures and interact with them to achieve business and communications objectives.

You Will Be Responsible For

  • Driving the vision and providing thought leadership on how to meet the needs of our constituents using multimedia channels.
  • Managing the Media Center team comprised of Rotary Magazine, Web Content, the Social Media and Media Relations teams.
  • Managing Rotary’s public outreach or external media campaigns by combining social and digital content with the media relations efforts.
  • Developing and leading a cohesive content strategy that aligns content creation with overall business objectives. Ensure that content is targeted, relevant, and contributes to the implementation of Rotary’s Action Plan.
  • Overseeing the Rotary magazine and its operations, as well as Rotary’s digital content ecosystem, including Rotary’s website (rotary.

org and My Rotary), Rotary.org / magazine, e-newsletters, and other digital distribution channels.

  • Optimizing key digital channels by continuously adapting and adjusting to new technology and platforms.
  • Driving website traffic and engagement by leading development content that attracts both members and the public to Rotary’s website visitors and keeps them engaged.
  • Tracking the performance of content and making data-driven decisions about future content creation.
  • Collaborating with the broader communications team to ensure consistency of message in content across all channels.
  • Directing the operations of the Communications Product Portfolio, which includes rotary.org, endpolio.org, Brand Center, Rotary magazine webpage and digital subscription.
  • Working closely with the Director of Global Communication & Design to support the operations of the 30+ Rotary regional magazines produced independently around the world.
  • Taking charge of hiring, training and mentoring employees by fostering collaboration and continuous improvement.
  • Managing digital agencies, including planning, coordination, execution, and evaluation.
  • Identifying industry trends, audience preferences, and content gaps, and using the insights to inform content strategy.
  • Developing strong working relationships with key internal clients.
  • Maintaining a productive, supportive environment in a very relationship-based culture.
  • Representing the organization at events as assigned.
  • Serving as a trusted advisor to senior management across the organization.
