The Lab for Globalization and Shared Prosperity, Department of Government at Georgetown University College of Arts & Sciences is committed to cutting-edge research on how globalization and social investment impact shared prosperity at the local level.

Through our research initiatives and partnerships, we aim to drive meaningful conversations, propose actionable solutions, and contribute to the advancement of a more just, inclusive, and sustainable world.

The Data Scientist supports the creation of an annual globalization and shared prosperity' index. The index will map the geographic distribution of districts and counties vulnerable to -and thriving from- different aspects of globalization in the U.

S., as well as identify and quantify the multidimensional nature of the benefits and costs that they bear. The incumbent will lead the research, writing, data and statistical analysis processes to create a robust index.

Expectations include being able to perform analysis with limited supervision, deliver high quality work in a timely manner, and participate in the development, dissemination, and presentation of research findings.

Additional duties include, but are not limited to :

  • Pull publicly available data from multiple sources to create index, analyzing quantitative data (ideally using R, Stata, or Python).
  • Draft methodology language for new research endeavors and proposal.
  • Manage all aspects of data collection, with a keen eye towards detail and documentation to ensure the replicability and longevity of the index.
  • Assign and oversee data-related work conducted by research assistants, convening weekly meetings with research assistants to check in on index progress.
  • Convene bi-weekly meetings with faculty to seek guidance on research and data issues, supporting the Special Assistant as necessary to carry out administrative tasks related to the Lab.
  • Create tables, graphs, dashboards, and other data visualizations that clearly communicate research findings, and help contribute data to workshop presentations, publications, website, and other public dissemination of findings.

Work Interactions

The position with the Lab furthers GU's mission to promote social justice. The Data Scientist will report directly to Professor Rudra and oversee the technical work undertaken by research assistants hired by the Lab.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree; Master's Degree in Economics, International Relations, or Mathematics strongly preferred
  • Experience coding and working with large datasets
  • Minimum of two years of relevant research experience preferred
  • Knowledge of microeconometrics, international trade and related fields such as labor, industrial organization, and political economy
  • Experience with coding and the management of large databases, data visualization, and using Tableau and geographic data visualization tools
  • Strong written, research, and verbal communications skills with a high functionality in Microsoft Office software package and proven expertise in statistical software such as R and Stata
  • Ability to meet rapid, multiple deadlines in a fast-paced work environment, as well as work well under pressure with discretion and mature judgment
  • Professional demeanor, high level of comfort working in a culturally-diverse environment, and with high-profile individuals from academic, policy, corporate, government, and international circles
  • Excellent data collection, analysis and synthesis, and writing skills, and ability to work interpedently and in teams in the research process
  • Strong professional judgement and cultural-capacity in working with working with diverse groups of practitioners, researchers, and policy makers from multiple country contexts, including those with high-level roles

Pay Range :

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is :

$47,586.00 - $87,558.13

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
