PRIMARY PURPOSE :

The Lead Custodian shall be responsible for the direct supervision of the Custodian and / or substitute Custodians serving in the location in which the Lead Custodian is assigned.

The Lead Custodian is responsible for the daily quality assurance of his / her assigned facility and for maintaining a high standard of customer service to the students and staff of GISD.

The GISD Lead Custodian must be able to perform his / her responsibilities without direct supervision.

QUALIFICATIONS :

Education / Certification :

High school diploma or GED

Clear and Valid Texas driver's license

Special Knowledge / Skills / Abilities :

Demonstrated ability to read and interpret documentation such as safety procedures, operating maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals

Demonstrated ability to operate cleaning equipment and lift heavy equipment

Ability to speak, read and understand English.

Effective planning and organizational skills

Ability to manage personnel

Experience :

Minimum of one (1) year experience

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

• Perform custodial responsibilities in a professional and safe manner to provide a sanitary and appealing environment in GISD facilities at all times
• Interact and develop a cooperative working relationship with all GISD, staff, support staff, students, and visitors in a moral and ethical manner.

Contact with students and staff should be limited to professional contact only.

• Respond to phone calls from the district and team members whenever called.
• Mandatory to report to campus when called in emergency situations.
• Assist with making sure campus is covered when there are call ins.
• Make sure team members are in uniform and assignments are complete.
• Provide facility security by assuming responsibility for securing all windows and doors and safeguarding access to facilities, keys, and security codes by unauthorized persons
• Report to campus administration or to Custodial Supervisor any suspicious persons or activity on or around GISD properties
• Become familiar with the location and use of fire safety equipment
• Comply with all local / federal laws and regulations for the proper storage use and disposal of hazardous materials and waste
• Operate and maintain all district equipment in a professional and safe manner in accordance with rules, regulations, and district and departmental policies.
• Monitor assigned areas making sure custodians are completing their work assignment.
• Maintain a cleaning schedule that will include cleaning, dusting, and / or vacuuming of floors, carpeting, walls, whiteboards, trashcans, windows, glass, furniture, equipment, and restrooms.
• Keep school / building and grounds, including entryways, sidewalks, driveways, parking lots and play areas neat and clean.
• Assist in maintaining an inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment and request additional supplies as needed from Supervisor.
• Advise supervisor when school or building requires a work order for a specific area / location.
• Perform preventative maintenance on all custodial equipment. Operate all equipment according to established safety procedures.
• Comply with the Texas Hazardous Communications Act, which includes emphasizing safety, storing, handling, labeling, and application of all chemicals.
• Maintain professional appearance at all times by wearing appropriated attire, which includes work pants with a GISD Custodial Services Department issued shirt.
• Regular attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job.

Safety

• Maintain safety standards in accordance with federal, state, district, and insurance regulations and train technicians on proper and safe use of equipment and chemicals.
• Ensure that established safety procedures are followed including lifting and climbing. Make sure that tools and equipment are operated and chemicals handled according to established safety procedures.
• Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
• Follow established procedures for locking, checking, and safeguarding facilities.
• Inventory and Equipment.
• Evaluate and recommend custodial supplies and equipment to be used.
• Prepare, implement, and maintain preventive maintenance schedules for custodial equipment. Ensure that maintenance is completed and equipment is in safe operating condition.

Recommend replacement of existing equipment when necessary.

Conduct regular inventory of physical equipment and supplies, maintain accurate records, order tools, equipment, and supplies as needed.

Supervise, evaluate, and recommend the hiring and firing of custodians.

Tools / Equipment Used : Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; standard cleaning tools and equipment;

standard yard maintenance equipment; may use small hand tools and power tools; light truck or van.

Posture : Frequent standing, kneeling / squatting, bending / stooping, pushing / pulling, and twisting; may work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.

Motion : Frequent walking; climbing stairs; ladders / scaffolding; regular grasping / squeezing, wrist flexion / extension, and overhead reaching; frequent driving

Lifting : Regular moderate lifting and carrying (15-44 pounds); occasional heavy lifting (45 pounds and over).
