Overview

Manufacturing engineers develop and improve manufacturing processes for catalog and custom Edmund Optics products. They provide engineering and manufacturing support expertise to enable on-time, lowest-cost hardware delivery with performance and reliability that exceed customer expectations.

They execute across all phases of a program including proposal capture, design for manufacturability (DFM), process development, transition to production, and production support.

Manufacturing engineers design, control, and improve the manufacturing process through a collaborative effort with the Edmund Optics (EO) value stream team in order to reduce cycle time and cost while improving quality.

A Senior Manufacturing Engineer contributes to a wide variety of tasks and activities throughout all phases of product development.

They are an experienced voice capable of providing knowledgeable manufacturing insights directly to customers and key stakeholders.

On some of the largest projects and programs at EO, they take a lead role in developing, documenting, and eventually transferring testing and assembly processes to production.

After hand-off they are seen as a go-to resource for assembly technicians who need support while troubleshooting issues.

By analyzing yield data, they make suggestions towards improving manufacturability. Additionally, they assist with process improvement efforts within the department and develop more junior engineers through training and mentorship.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze manufacturability during DFM reviews of new products
  • Provide feedback on assembly and testing feasibility to key stakeholders during proposal capture
  • Interface directly with customers to understand needs and provide feedback on manufacturability
  • Work with design engineers to specify and develop tooling / fixturing needs
  • Assemble and test prototypes in order to provide feedback to assist with design efforts
  • Provide project-specific and long-term strategic suggestions for equipment acquisitions
  • Document assembly and test procedures thoroughly
  • Document best practices and SOPs by working closely with various cross functional teams
  • Hand off mature product manufacturing processes to production by training assembly technicians and providing comprehensive documentation
  • Provide real-time technical support to assembly technicians as necessary after handoff
  • Based on performance requirements, recommend specific testing methods and prepare stations
  • Assist with production transfers by traveling to other EO sites or to customer locations
  • Assist EO's quality team by analyzing and providing recommendations to improve yield
  • Perform gage R&R analysis to improve product scalability
  • Track metrics and perform statistical process control (SPC) checks to improve product quality
  • Investigate and integrate process automation where possible to improve efficiency
  • Generate training content and assist in the development of more junior engineers
  • Promote company expertise by authoring papers, participating in webinars, etc.
  • Engage in process improvement efforts within the department
  • Attend external training, seminars, and conferences to continue personal growth and further the technical exposure of the company

Required Skills & Abilities :

  • Knowledge of optical and optomechanical engineering fundamentals
  • Ability to interpret engineering prints and analyze designs for manufacturability
  • Experience assembling and aligning optical components
  • Experience using a variety of test equipment to measure surface quality, environmental durability, and optical performance
  • Familiarity with quality standards and processes (ISO 9001 & AS9100)
  • Experience using CAD solid modeling software
  • Strong technical writing skills for documentation of designs, plans, and procedures
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate well across different teams, disciplines, and cultures

Education / Experience

Undergraduate degree (graduate degree preferred) in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) field and a minimum of 10 years for prior, relevant experience in lab and / or manufacturing environments (preferably optics related).
