As a Surgical Technologist, under the supervision of a registered nurse, responsibilities include but are not limited to providing individualized care to the surgical patient, demonstrating an extensive knowledge base of a variety of surgical procedures.
Per the needs of the center on a regular and / or as needed basis, under the supervision of the Clinical Director, the Sterile Processor ensures proper care and maintenance for all surgical instrumentation, equipment and sterilization processes.
Demonstrates good knowledge of principles and practices of aseptic technique. Demonstrates knowledge of equipment, instruments, procedures and supplies used in the operating room.
Able to work under pressure and in situations that demand patience, tact and endurance. Provides on-going and continual communication with Operating Room staff.
Communicates special equipment needs as they
arise. Monitors the daily schedule for changes in instrumentation.
Qualifications and Experience
- High School graduate or GED
- Completion of Surgical Tech program by an Accredited Institution
- BLS Certification within 90 days of hire.
- Certification of Sterile Processing preferred
- Certification of Surgical Technologist preferred
- Minimum 1 year operating room experience preferred.
- Minimum 1 year sterile processing experience preferred.
- Familiar with instruments and equipment related to perioperative nursing.
- Ability to work well with people under deadlines and stress
- Ability to be flexible and take on new responsibilities
Primary Job Duties Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following :
- Demonstrates proper decontamination, cleaning, wrapping, and sterilization of surgical instruments.
- Maintains all instrument trays assuring that the trays are complete, stocked and in good working order
- Follow universal precautions and safe practices in handling biohazardous materials
- Enter essential information into the computer system and complete surgery center’s required continuing education
- Actively participates in the process improvement activities with SPD and Operating room. Participates in cost containment
- Assist with planned patient care, under the supervision of a RN. Promote a safe environment and prevent complications of infection by maintaining necessary supplies and equipment.
- Assure sterility and modify care delivery accordance to patient needs
- Demonstrate knowledge of principles and practices of aseptic techniques and care of specialized equipment
- Demonstrate the ability to work with and assist with various procedures, types of equipment and surgeons.
- Communicate appropriate information to essential team members under various conditions
- Maintain the surgical unit in a state of readiness and prepares the OR suits according to patient needs and procedure types
- Maintain equipment in good working order
- Collect and compile data for and prepare reports / summaries of internal quality improvement studies.
