GENERAL SUMMARY / OVERVIEW STATEMENT :

Under the supervision and direction of the Chiefs of Pediatric Hospital Medicine, the Pediatric Hospital Medicine physicians, and the Administrative Manager, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) is responsible for the care of inpatients assigned to Pediatric Hospital Medicine in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts governing practice.

The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant will obtain patient histories and perform examinations, participate in bedside diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, coordinate tests and consultations, implement treatment plans, communicate with Pediatric Attending Physicians and house staff, communicate with referring physicians, perform patient education, and prepare patients for discharge.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

1.0 Patient Care Management

1.1 Primary management of Pediatric Hospital Medicine patients, in conjunction with Pediatric Hospital Medicine faculty. This includes early morning assessment and orders, mid-day performance and coordination of tests and procedures, and sign-out of patients.

1.2 Obtain a detailed, accurate medical history and perform a comprehensive physical examination on pediatric patients.

1.3 Reinforce information presented by the attending physician to the patient and / or family as necessary. Order necessary diagnostic tests, consultations, and procedures as requested.

Prescribe medications as necessary.

1.4 Assist in teaching and education with patients and families for routine and complex issues as needed.

1.5 Assist with management of pediatric patients. Write daily notes on appropriate patients and discuss the care of each patient with the clinical staff members that are involved with the care of that patient.

Maintain communications with pediatric attending physicians and referring physicians.

1.6 Perform basic and advanced cardiac life support procedures as necessary and direct these efforts until the arrival of a resident or attending physician.

1.7 Prepare pediatric patients for discharge, including patient and family discharge teaching, continuing care and rehabilitation arrangements in conjunction with nursing, writing discharge prescriptions, and confirming primary care or referring physician follow-up.

1.8 Prescribe medications for pediatric patients in accordance with service polices and / or attending physician's instructions.

1.9 Obtain consultations from other services at the request of the attending physician

1.10 Complete formal discharge summaries of pediatric patients for the attending's review and signature.

1.11 Participate in educational as well as collaborative pediatric and departmental meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS : (MUST be realistic, neither overstated nor understated, and related to the essential functions of the job.)

  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program. A college degree is required.
  • 5+ years of surgical and pediatric experience desirable, but not required.
  • Must maintain this certification by completing required Continuing Medical Education credits and completing recertification guidelines as indicated by specialty.
  • Qualified in basic and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) as established by the American Heart Association.

SKILLS / ABILITIES / COMPETENCIES REQUIRED :

  • Possess the ability to care for pediatric patients with a broad range of medical problems.
  • Possess the maturity, self-confidence, and ability to follow complex patient management plans as directed by the attending staff.
  • Eligible for state and federally controlled substances registration.
  • Diagnose and treat health problems; obtain patient histories, perform comprehensive physical exams, do simple diagnostic tests, prepare a diagnosis and implement treatment procedures for illnesses;

and prescribe medications.

Experience in treating pediatric patients

WORKING CONDITIONS :

Patients of Pediatric Hospital Medicine are seen on two general pediatric inpatient units (Ellison 17 & 18) and on the Young Adult Unit at Massachusetts Eye & Ear (MEE).

Computers and phones utilized on the units are unit-based computers, shared with all other health care providers.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS :
