Summary : The School Guidance Counselor is a skilled, certified professional whose chief responsibility is to provide individual and group counseling.
The counselor is a consultant to teachers and parents, a team member with the other members of the pupil personnel staff, an interpreter of records and tests, a source for a wide variety of information, a confident, and advocate for students.
Essential Functions :
Demonstrates knowledge of content and pedagogy of counseling theory, best practices and techniques
Demonstrates knowledge of students and child and adolescent development
Sets instructional goals and outcomes for comprehensive school counseling services
Demonstrates knowledge of programmatic resources was well as local, state, and national resources
Designs coherent instruction and counseling programs that are equitable and accessible to the population
Conducts reliable assessments and contributes to the data-analysis teams
Creates an environment of respect and rapport for colleagues and students
Establishes a culture for learning with high expectations for student achievement
Manages classroom guidance lessons with procedures and routines
Demonstrates a high level of understanding of management techniques and competency managing behavior in various situations
Organizes physical space that supports learning
Uses clear oral and written communication with students, parents, and staff
Uses effective questioning and discussion techniques
Engages students in learning matched to their needs
Uses assessments in instruction and service delivery

Education and / or Certification Required :
Master's degree
Additional approved school counseling programs
PA Certification in School Counseling
- Must score 173 on Praxis Mathematics, 172 on Praxis Reading, and 173 on Praxis Writing
- Must score a minimum of 590 on the Praxis II School Guidance and Counseling
Experience Needed :
A minimum of an additional 300 clock hours of internship / supervised field experiences to include instructional experience and a minimum of 70 hours (elementary) OR 75 hours (secondary) of direct service with individual and group clients.
