At Houston Methodist the Staff RegisteredNurse (RN) position is responsible for functioning at the Competentto Proficient stage of Benners model of clinical practice.

TheStaff RN position provides professional nursing care to a diversepatient population conducts nursing assessments assists with examsand treatment clinical triage patient education and maintenance ofmedical records.

The Staff RN position provides direct patient careeffectively and efficiently which may include patients with variedand complex needs.

This position communicates and collaborates withthe physicians and interprofessional health care team to facilitatecoordinate and maintain compassionate efficient quality care andachievement of desired treatment outcomes during and after care.

The Staff RN position demonstrates clinical competence whenproviding care using technology administering medicationsperforming procedures and managing emergencies acting as a patientand family advocate in order to monitor and maintain patientrights.

This position uses leadership skills / clinical judgment incoordinating patient care and directing / delegating activities ofthe patient care clinical team.

SERVICEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Followsthe patient and familycentered care standards as outlined in theHouston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document.

Conductsnursing assessments assists with exams and treatment andmaintenance of medical records. Practices in a manner that iscongruent with cultural diversity and inclusionprinciples.

  • Advocates onpatient / familys behalf to identify and resolve clinical and ethicalconcerns utilizing appropriate resources coordinating with theinterprofessional team to facilitate a holistic and goalorientedapproach to care across the continuum that meets the patientsphysical psychosocial and spiritualneeds.
  • Monitor andeffectively manage the electronic health record for incoming andoutgoing electronic communication that includes but not limited topatient medical advice requests and refill requests that directlyimpact patient careplans.

QUALITY / SAFETYESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Followsthe standards related to the nursing process regulatoryrequirements and professional practice as outlined in the HoustonMethodist Professional Nursing Practice document.

Identifies areasof practice improvements with researchbased evidence to achievequality measures and patient safety outcomes supported by accuratedocumentation and patientteaching.

Provides andmodifies care to complex patients and coordinates care with theinterprofessional team based on evaluation of the patientscondition supported by accurate documentation.

Utilizes clinicaljudgement using an evidencebased analyticalapproach.

  • Improves qualityand safety scores through peertopeer accountability reporting nearmisses and collaborating with the interprofessional health careteam.
  • Operates allrequired equipment and machinery accurately and safely preparesassembles and sterilizes instruments and supplies according toparameters of sterilization in accordance with The Department ofHealth TJC OSHA CDC AAMI and AORN standards.

Maintains appropriaterecords and monitors quality control and infection controlstandards. Provides asset management and support of surgicalinstruments and trays belonging to or consigned to thefacility.

Prepareequipment and assist the provider during treatment examination andtesting of patients. Ensure exam rooms are stocked neat andorderly.

Clean sterilize and test medicalequipment.

FINANCEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Displaysselfmotivation to independently manage time effectively timelydocument care minimize incidental overtime and prioritize dailytasks.

Provides input into department resource utilizationincluding capital and operational budgetneeds.

  • Contributes towardsmeeting department financial targets through optimizing efficiencyand other areas according to departmentspecifications.
  • Maintainstorage of patient products in a neat and orderly fashion work tomaximize theeffectiveness of the clinical spaces and supportinventory management for clinical materials by maintaing accurateinventory through routine reconciliation.

GROWTH / INNOVATIONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Champions new carepathways or service line implementations to improve care to thecommunity. Identifies trends for improvement opportunities orpractice changes and supports initiatives.

Researches the changeand presents options to appropriate clinicalleadership.

Identifies andpresents areas for innovation efficiency and improvement in patientcare or department operations using evidencebased practiceliterature.

Offers innovative solutions through evidencebasedpractice / performance improvement projects and departmentactivities. Ensures own career discussions occur with appropriatemanagement.

Completes and updates My Development plan on an ongoingbasis.

EDUCATION

Graduatefrom an accredited School ofNursing

WORKEXPERIENCE

One year ofnursing experience in a healthcareenvironment

LICENSES ANDCERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • RNRegistered Nurse Texas State Licensure and / or Compact StateLicensure within 60 days OR
  • RNTemp Registered NurseTemporary State Licensure within 60 days AND
  • BLS Basic Life Support(AHA) AND
  • Other credentialsand certifications as defined by department / service line
