Hybrid Full-Time Surgical Assistant
Veterinary Surgery Specialists seeks a motivated veterinary assistant to join our mobile surgery department. This position presents an exciting opportunity to work in a specialty setting and develop your skills as a surgery veterinary assistant.
Qualified candidates can assist in various orthopedic and soft tissue surgeries. We encourage advancing knowledge, technical skills, and accountability while practicing at a high level of professional medicine.
You will have a weekly schedule with a five-day workweek and won't be required to work on weekends or holidays.
Summary of surgical assistant :
- Assist with surgical admission and discharge, procedures, and appointments.
- Assist with patient care pre-, during, and post-surgery.
- Serve as a sterile surgical assistant as needed.
- Work closely and effectively with other surgical team members
Overview of daily duties :
- Set up and break down OR daily onsite or at a referral clinic as needed.
- Has own car and has own insurance.
- Mileage reimbursement when offsite at another referral clinic as needed.
- Surgical admission and discharge
- Patient preparation for surgery follows all necessary VSS standards and procedures during the pre-operative and post-phase.
- Scrub into various surgical procedures as a sterile assistant as needed.
- Patient care for recovering surgical patients.
- Instrument care, including cleaning, packing, and sterilizing.
- Handling and restraint of patients for consults, physical exams, and procedures in a safe and empathetic manner
- Operated and maintained steam autoclave, plasma, anprolene sterilizer, and other assigned equipment duties.
- Obtaining thorough patient history and liaising between clients and doctors.
- Use of veterinary software for medical record-keeping.
- Client communication, including phone calls, message taking, and checking emails as needed.
- Complete any other tasks assigned / delegated to you.
Availability :
Weekdays Monday -Friday 8a - 5p (No Weekends or Holiday's)
Qualities and Qualifications :
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Self-motivated, reliable, team player, and effective communicator
- 6 to 12+ months of previous experience as a veterinary assistant
- required*
- Familiarity and ability to recall surgical instruments, equipment, and procedures when asked.
- Basic knowledge of sterile and aseptic techniques, drug calculation, and conversions
- Enjoys learning and working as part of a team.
- Ability to communicate with coworkers, clients, and referral hospitals via verbal and written communication.
- Knowledge of basic medical terminology and reading medical records
- Always maintains professionalism and composure with coworkers and clients.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize in a busy work environment.
- Comfortable with frequent use of computers and tablets for paperless electronic record-keeping
- Ability to bend, kneel, and stand for long and short periods and lift patients and equipment up to 50 pounds individually.
- Obtain patient vitals and alert DVM, CVT, or staff member if vitals are abnormal or have changed.
- Basic Animal CPR training is required initially and every two years following certification.
- This person should be capable of taking on delegated responsibilities when required.
- Have the potential to be trained in multiple areas to assist with team building.
