At Houston Methodist the Senior ClinicalDietitian position is responsible for functioning as an experiencedclinician at the requirements established by the Academy ofNutrition and Dietetics (AND).
In addition to fulfilling the dutiesof clinical dietitian primary responsibilities for this positioninclude application of the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) includingthe completion of the nutrition assessment determination of thenutrition diagnosis developing and implementing nutritionintervention(s) and monitoring and evaluating of the patientsprogress.
The Senior Clinical Dietitian position serves as apreceptor for dietetic interns and mentors entry level cliniciansstudents interns and other departmental employees working closelywith the interprofessional healthcare team to provideinpatient / outpatient care that is integrated and compatible withthe patientfocused goals and objectives.
This position participatesin department and quality improvement projects for inpatient oroutpatient departments.
PEOPLEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Consultsindividually with clients regarding nutritional concerns.Recommends nutrition plans to clients based on physical resultsgoals and concerns.
Corresponds with other health careprofessionals regarding clients nutrition care plan asnecessary.
Acts as aresource person for all nutrition inquiries and provide counselingwhile upholding Houston Methodist and industry standards of ethics.
Uses therapeutic communication which includes active listening andteaching to establish a relationship with patients families andinterprofessional health care team to collaborate on the plan ofcare.

Assessesthe nutrition status of clients and / or patients. Implementsnutritional care according to the Academy of Nutrition andDietetics Nutrition Care Process (NCP).
Develops and instructsnutrition education classes in conjunction with dietitian team.Consistently evaluates the patients comprehension and adaptsteaching methods accordingly.
Utilizes evidencebased knowledgeapplied to the patients condition and recommends change in the planof care.
- Advocates onpatient / familys behalf to identify and resolve clinical and ethicalconcerns utilizing appropriateresources.
- Initiatesimprovements towards department score for patient satisfactionthrough peertopeer accountability to servicestandards.

- Selfinitiatescrosscoverage assistance to ensure continuity of care. Identifiesand documents evaluation of outcomes. Collaborates with health careteam to document correct degree of malnutrition in EMR to ensureadequate intervention for positiveoutcomes.
- Provides care toincreasingly complex patients coordinates care with theinterprofessional team. Utilizes sound clinical judgement using anevidencebased analytical approach to ensure patient nutrition needsare met.
- Ensurescontinuity of care by completing quality monitors. Identifies areasof practice improvements with researchbased evidence to achievepatient safety outcomes supported by accurate documentation.
Completes quality indicators for meeting department and hospitaltargets on the clinical nutritiondashboard.

GROWTH / INNOVATIONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Activelyparticipates and is the nutrition representative on at least onedepartment committee task force and work group.
Participates in aminimum of one continuous quality improvement / process improvementproject.
- Serves as amentor and trainer with the department. Conducts interdepartmentaland interprofessional training & mentorship to include : aminimum of one diet knowledge training session for nutritionassistants annually mentorship of student volunteers as applicableand subspecialty training on nutrition care for dietitians andother healthcareprofessionals.
- Serves as apreceptor for dietetic interns who are a part of an ACENDaccredited dietetic internship program. Preceptor responsibilitiesto include mentoring and training interns to utilize the nutritioncare process appropriately hands on training for Nutrition FocusedPhysical Assessments cosigning nutrition care notes in the EMR andevaluation of an interns performance based on ACENDcompetencies.
- Seeksopportunities to identify selfdevelopment needs and takesappropriate action. Maintains professional development competenciesby reviewing research for application to practice.
Ensures owncareer discussions occur with appropriate management. Completes andupdates the My Development Plan on an ongoingbasis.
