Civil Engineer III
Contract Duration : Through November 7, 2025 (with strong potential for extension)
Location : Hybrid - Jackson, Howell, Royal Oak, or Livonia, Michigan
Headquarters : Any Gas Service Center in Jackson, Howell, Livonia, or Royal Oak
Travel Requirements : Field visits are required, with potential travel to project sites up to a 4-hour radius from Jackson, Michigan, approximately 3 to 5 days per week.
This includes pre-engineering meetings, pre-bid walkdowns, construction milestones, and quality inspections.
Department Overview :
The Project Engineering department at Consumers Energy provides engineering leadership for civil and structural projects related to high-voltage distribution substations and major economic development projects across the state of Michigan.
These initiatives support expanding electric capacity and improving grid resilience, with a focus on high-voltage distribution and substation upgrades.
The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team responsible for multimillion-dollar substation projects, collaborating with project managers, engineers, and in-house design staff to ensure design consistency and quality.
Project Scope :
The role involves managing multiple substation projects ranging from $2 million to $40 million, supporting internal and external high-voltage distribution substations and rebuilds.
With a long-term project pipeline extending over 4-5 years, the role requires significant expertise in civil and structural engineering to drive key projects from conception through execution.
This includes assessing third-party design work, ensuring compliance with standards, and providing essential support to the project team for any civil / structural-related inquiries.
Key Responsibilities :
- Scope Identification and Management : Define and manage the civil and structural engineering scope for each project. Collaborate with project managers and engineers to create and oversee the Scope of Work (SOW), ensuring project specifications and requirements are met.
- Technical Leadership : Serve as the subject matter expert in civil and structural engineering. Provide technical guidance, assist in contracting construction services, and conduct engineering reviews throughout the project lifecycle.
- Vendor Management and Review : Evaluate third-party engineering deliverables, ensuring compliance with design standards and quality requirements.
- Issue Resolution : Identify, address, and resolve any SOW or engineering-related issues that could impact project timelines or budgets.
- Project Closeout : Complete project closeout activities, including final record drawings, test records, and quality documentation.
- Site Visits and Field Inspections : Regularly visit project sites to oversee construction progress, conduct quality inspections, and ensure adherence to project specifications.
Technical Skills and Qualifications :
- Education : Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering required; Professional Engineer (PE) license in Michigan preferred.
- Experience : Minimum of 5 years in civil / structural engineering. Experience with high-voltage substation or utilities projects is essential, with at least 6 months to 1 year of relevant experience in substation engineering.
- Collaborative and Open-Minded Approach : Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively and adaptively across multidisciplinary teams.
- Problem-Solving Skills : Demonstrated technical curiosity and a problem-solving mindset to handle complex engineering challenges.
- Design Knowledge : Familiarity with site layout, foundation design, and stormwater management. Ability to conduct engineering calculations and understand detailed design concepts.
- Software Proficiency : Basic working knowledge of MicroStation and AutoCAD Civil 3D for reviewing and manipulating drawings (heavy CAD expertise is not required).
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Teams) and Adobe; familiarity with SharePoint, PowerApps, Primavera, Unifier, and ProjectWise is beneficial.
