Historic Preservation Training Center TTAP Intern- The White House and President’s Park

Position Details

Stewards Individual Placement Program (STE) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources.

Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

STE in partnership with the National Park Service and Historic Preservation Training Center are seeking individuals to participate in the Traditional Trades Advancement Program.

Participants will receive introductory training in a variety of traditional trades and will develop an understanding of historic resource stewardship while helping to preserve our nation’s historic resources.

This program provides participants with marketable skills and excellent exposure to the historic preservation career field within the NPS as well as the private sector.

This internship position will work with Park facilities team and the Historic Preservation Training Center to focus on the historic preservation of The White House and President’s Park.

Primary project focus will include, the restoration of masonry hardscape walkways throughout the park that consist of brick pavers along with granite curbs and edging materials.

Position Responsibilities will include :

  • Structural Preservation / Restoration (Buildings, Statues, Monuments)
  • General Preservation / Park Maintenance (power washing)
  • Historic / Cultural Landscape Preservation / Maintenance (walkways, stone walls, barriers, etc.)
  • Masonry focused project work

Minimum Requirements :

  • Moderate to heavy physical effort is required for this position, including occasional lifting or handling of objects over 75lbs using proper techniques.
  • Standing or kneeling for long periods and will be required to climb ladders, work from scaffolding or platforms, work on uneven or angled surfaces such as a roof, and / or be able to work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to stoop, bend, kneel, climb and walk in all manners of environmental conditions such as rain, mud, and extreme heat or cold.
  • Personal transportation will be required to report to job site.
  • 18-30 years of age, maximum 35 years old for Veterans with valid DD-214
  • United States citizen or legal resident
  • Ability to pass a US Secret Service background check and access clearance for project site.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Interest in historic preservation, masonry, and / or trades.
  • Ability to commit to a 26-week experience of combined training and hands-on work
  • Flexibility to work outside of traditional hours may be required

Benefits :

  • $520 / wk + $200 / wk housing allowance (equivalent to $18 / hr)(pre-tax)
  • Public Land Corps Hiring Authority Eligibility - must meet 640 hours of service.
