Staff Veterinarian

Position Overview

Essential Functions

In the hospital / clinic -

  • Oversee treatment of animals, often in distress, brought in through our nationally recognized Emergency Animal Medical Technicians to provide accurate care instructions to team of clinic technicians
  • Evaluate owned animals brought in for appointments. Perform physical exams, diagnostics, therapeutics and determine appropriate disposition for animals in Admissions.
  • Provide clear instructions and guidance to all clients from adopters to pet parents to fosters to ensure that we set up owners for success
  • Perform, train on spay / neuter and other surgeries
  • Formulate, oversee, present, implement, review and update a humane euthanasia program

Administrative -

  • Maintain all medical records
  • Monitor, dispense and log controlled substances according to standards established by the DEA
  • Be the mentor by formulating and teaching medical classes for staff, volunteers and other agencies
  • Assist other departments in any situation involving the welfare of the animals, such as testifying in court, appearing in media releases, providing necessary documentation regarding the health of the animals and other situations requiring medical expertise
  • Be available for "on-call" status for emergency situations and respond quickly
  • Advise Lead Veterinarian of clinic activities and recommend possible changes to upgrade the services
  • Attend seminars to satisfy continuing education requirements for Arizona D.V.M. license renewal
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education / Certifications / Licenses :

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine OR Veterinary Medical Doctor Degree
  • Must be licensed to practice in Arizona.

Experience :

  • One year of experience in a veterinary practice with emphasis on surgery skills.
  • Must possess above average surgery skills and a humane attitude towards animals and people.
  • Orthopedic surgery experience is a plus.
  • Must be able to evaluate health status in an objective manner and determine most appropriate disposition of an animal.
  • Good communications skills are necessary.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities :

Language - Able to speak, read, write and understand English.

Mathematical - Basic

Technical - Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook and Explorer; able to learn other software programs as necessary.

Proficiency with or able to learn / use Chameleon software (for use with animals in a shelter environment).

Other :

Regular attendance and punctuality required.

Work Environment / Physical Demands :

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

The employee must occasionally lift and / or move up to 50 pounds.

There may be occasional wet floors, animal noises, odors, and dander. Most time will be spent in a typical air conditioned and heated environment.
