Description

Henry Holt is seeking an experienced, creative, and enthusiastic Associate Director of Publicity with a track record of breaking out literary / commercial crossover fiction and nonfiction, who has the media connections and drive to successfully execute high caliber publicity campaigns across Holt's wide-ranging list.

This is an opportunity to contribute to a bestselling, critically acclaimed publishing program. For more than 150 years, Holt has published titles in the history, science and nature, journalism, memoir, politics, literary and upmarket commercial fiction, graphic novel and poetry categories, among others.

Our authors, who have ranged from Robert Frost and Toni Morrison to Edward Snowden and Neil deGrasse Tyson and Alison Espach to Jos Olivarez and Nathan Thrall, have won prizes and awards, including the Nobel Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and many others.

The ideal candidate will have experience strategizing on and executing high profile PR campaigns from start to finish with the ability to pivot and be nimble as the news cycle and opportunities develop, bring a well-established network of national broadcast, print and online media contacts, and excel in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

This person is comfortable working autonomously within the tight-knit, dynamic and highly collaborative Holt publicity team and has very strong communication skills.

Additionally, this role includes the mentorship of junior publicity staff, fostering their professional growth and ensuring the team's collective achievements.

This position reports to the VP, Executive Director of Publicity.

NOTE : This is a hybrid position with in-office responsibilities which include attendance at in-person meetings with authors and agents, staffing of author events, and accompanying authors to media engagements and (infrequently) on tour.

What you'll do :

  • Independently handles all publicity activities on assigned campaigns to ensure success including : developing compelling and unique angles, writing dynamic pitch letters and press releases, coordinating galley and finished book mailings, booking top-tier national and local media, scheduling impactful author events (traditional bookstore appearances and bundled off-site events) and travel, organizing publicity updates for division and sales teams, all while staying inclose communication with authors and agents throughout.
  • Develops talking points with authors and briefs them on interview preparation along with light media training, accompanying them to interviews where appropriate.
  • Supports authors in developing off-the-book page essays, feature ideas and serial placement.
  • Liaises with key departments such as marketing, sales, and editorial to ensure a cohesive message is being delivered throughout marketing / publicity initiatives.
  • Fosters and maintains substantive relationships with key broadcast, print, and digital mediacontacts.
  • Participates in seasonal pitch meetings with key media contacts to strengthen relationships and seed early coverage.
  • Identifies opportunities for enhancing and improving both imprint campaigns and departmental best practices new tools, platforms, partners, outlets, trends, etc.
  • Regularly presents at sales and marketing meetings.
  • Reads proposals for acquisition and evaluates potential from a publicity perspective, attending meetings with prospective authors as needed.
  • Represents the imprint at industry events and in-house.
  • Shares supervision of a publicity assistant and mentors junior members of the department.

What you'll bring :

  • Minimum 8 years of hands-on book publicity experience, with an emphasis placed on booking top-tier media in both traditional and digital outlets and handling complex author tours.
  • Experience working with sensitive material and high-profile authors.
  • Exceptional communication (written and verbal) and pitching skills.
  • Experience working on fiction and nonfiction with a proven ability to generate creative angles and pitches.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure, to meet tight deadlines and changingpriorities (must be flexible and versatile), in a collaborative team environment.
  • Extensive knowledge of the media and a familiarity with book reviewers, magazine editors, producers, and online editors.
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively while also responding to urgent issues
  • A college degree or equivalent experience.

This role will have an annual salary of $103,000 - $130,000.
