Teacher Job Description
Notre Dame School, recognizing that each person is created in the image of God, educates students with developmental disabilities, and facilitates their integration into society.
Purpose : To provide appropriate educational, vocational, and independent living skills training that is designed to enhance student functioning, build confidence, and develop responsibility in every student.
Notre Dame School serves students ages 6-21 with mild to moderate developmental disabilities.
Job Responsibilities :
- Develop an annual IEP and, Transition Plan as appropriate, based on level of functioning, student need and parental input.
- Choose objectives and activities, in the subject area assigned, appropriate to the age and functioning level of the students.
- Develop lesson plans describing weekly activities designed to address specific objectives as outlined in the student’s Individual Education Plan.
- Show evidence of preparation by having appropriate materials / supplies available for activities and by planning for the maximum participation of assistants and volunteers assigned to the class.
- Maintain a favorable, positive climate for learning this includes a clean and orderly classroom that is.
- Maintain records of the activities and the student’s quarterly progress, based on a minimum of three assessments per nine-week period.
- Attend and actively participate in departmental meetings to discuss student needs, concerns etc.
- Consider individual student needs in developing and maintaining reasonable rules of classroom behavior.
- Develop and implement individual behavior plans as needed.
- Treat the students with respect and dignity and assist them to develop the skills needed to participate fully in their community.
- Implement the philosophy of a Catholic, Christian education through instruction and action.
- All Upper- school teachers are expected to go off campus to job sites and / or CBI.
Supervision :
The teacher reports directly to the principal but is expected to work cooperatively with the Department Head. She / he is responsible for the supervision of the students assigned to her / him on the daily schedule.
She is also responsible for providing supervision and an explanation of the activities to the teacher assistants and volunteers that are assigned to his / her classes.
Students must be supervised at all times.
Qualifications :
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college with a minimum of 12 hours in education (special education certification is preferred).
- Experience working with children with developmental disabilities.
- Good planning and organizational skills
- Ability to work well with other staff and volunteers- a team player.
- Knowledge and use of good behavior management strategies
