Purpose Statement
The job of speech language pathology assistant is done for the purpose of conducting a variety of tasks and treatment interventions to assist students with speech and language disorders.
This is done under the supervision of a speech language pathologist.
This position will work 88 days during the school year, eight hours per day, starting with the 2024 / 2025 school year.
At this time, this position will serve St. John and Endicott school district.
Functions
- Assists the speech language pathologist with speech, language, and hearing screenings without clinical interpretation.
- Assists the speech language pathologist during assessment of students, exclusive of administration and / or interpretation for the purpose of identifying communication disorders and developing recommendations for treatment.
- Follows documented treatment plans or protocols developed by the supervising speech language pathologist for the purpose of delivering effective therapy.
- Schedules student learning times for the purpose of ensuring student availability and providing instruction.
- Instructs individual students (e.g. phonetic alphabet, vocabulary and language, fluency, oral motor exercises, etc.) for the purpose of implementing goals for remediation of speech and language deficits.
- Documents student performance (e.g. tallying data for the SLP to use, preparing charts, records, graphs, etc.) for the purpose of providing information to the supervising SLP.
- Programs and provides instruction in the use of augmentative and alternative communication devices.
- Assists with clerical duties, such as preparing materials and scheduling activities, as directed by the SLP.
- Supports the supervising SLP in research projects, in-service training, public relations, and marketing of the NEWESD 101 special education cooperative.
- Performs upkeep and maintenance of equipment for the purpose of ensuring the delivery of therapy is not interrupted.
- Attends meetings and trainings as requested (e.g. sponsored in-service trainings, etc.) for the purpose of receiving and providing information.
- Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.
- Performs related duties as assigned. Related duties may not specifically be listed but are within the general occupational series and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's classification of work.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with an occasional need to upgrade skills due to changing job conditions.
Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include :
- adhering to safety practices,
- applying assessment instruments,
- operating standard office equipment using pertinent software applications,
- preparing and maintaining accurate records, and
- operating equipment used in speech and language therapy.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and ratios, read technical information, compose a variety of documents, facilitate group discussions, and solve practical problems.
Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes :
- articulation,
- language,
- fluency, and
- oral motor therapy.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and events, gather, collate, and classify data, and consider a number of factors when using equipment.
Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances, work with data utilizing defined and similar processes, and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods.
Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals, work with similar types of data, and utilize job-related equipment.
In working with others, problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation, and problem solving with equipment is moderate.
Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include :

General Requirements
Responsibility
Responsibilities include working under limited supervision following standardized practices and methods, leading, guiding, and coordinating others, and operating within a defined budget.
Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job’s functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the agency’s services.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands : occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and / or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and / or crawling, and significant fine finger dexterity.
Generally the job requires 60% sitting, 20% walking, and 20% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
Experience
Job related experience within specialized field is required.
Education
Bachelor's degree in the field of communications disorder or speech language pathology or a Speech Language Pathology Assistant certificate.
Certificates & Licenses
Valid driver’s license, required auto insurance, and reliable personal transportation.
