RESEARCH SCIENTIST ENGINEER 2

The University of Washington’s Department of Ophthalmology has an outstanding opportunity open for a Temporary Research Scientist 2 in the Lee Computational Ophthalmology Lab.

The Lee Computational Ophthalmology Lab is leading collaborative efforts on large multidisciplinary research projects, using Big Data and machine learning, involving the relationship between the eye and brain.

The Research Scientist / Engineer 2 will play a critical role in these important studies.

Under supervision, the Research Scientist 2 will apply statistical analyses and data mining techniques to extract, clean, and analyze various sources of data.

The RS will also apply the knowledge of statistics to assist with clinical study design, protocol development and statistical analysis of the clinical studies.

The Research Scientist will also review project related documents, prepare Statistical Analysis Plans and statistical reports, and participate in presentations and writing manuscripts.

Candidate is expected to continue in the development of technical expertise and knowledge related to data science, programming, machine learning, review the recent literature, and implement new techniques under supervision.

Responsibilities

Scientific Research Activities : 100%

The research scientist is expected to demonstrate initiatives and troubleshoot under limited supervision.

  • Perform statistical analyses including survival analyses, mixed linear models, Bayesian models, and advanced imputation techniques.
  • Data mining using state-of-the-art methods
  • Processing, cleansing, and verifying the integrity of data used for analysis
  • Data munging tasks to reshape data for statistical analyses, data visualization, and machine learning
  • Performing statistical analyses with traditional and machine learning methods
  • Working with Big data sources such as the electronic medical record or imaging data
  • Enhancing data collection and extraction procedures to include information that is relevant for building analytic systems
  • Collaborate with other team members to accomplish organizational goals and to learn new approaches and tasks while working under limited supervision
  • Review literature and recent advances in biostatistics, machine learning, data science, computer vision, and related research in ophthalmology
  • Data backup and basic computer hardware maintenance.
  • Writing research manuscripts, reports, reviews and summaries

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Biostatistics or related filed AND 1-2 years of experience.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in at least in one of two fields between Biostatistics or Computer Science is a requirement and knowledge and experience in both fields is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent applied statistics skills, such as distributions, statistical testing, regression, etc.
  • Excellent scripting and programming skills including : Java, SQL, Python, Torch, Lua, Linux
  • Experience working in headless server environments.
  • Desire to learn novel computational techniques and understanding of scaling processes.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of programs including Word, Powerpoint and Excel
  • Flexibility to learn new technologies, APIs, and SDKs by reading documentation.
  • Excellent understanding of machine learning techniques and algorithms, such as k-NN, Naive Bayes, SVM, Decision Forests, etc.
  • Experience with common data science toolkits, such as R, Weka, NumPy, MatLab, etc . Excellence in at least one of these is highly desirable
  • Great oral and written communication skills
  • Must have strong determination and a logical and independent mind to complete each project
  • Must have very strong organizational abilities and experience in team focused work environment with excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to multitask and participate in different projects
  • Ability to solve well defined problems using accepted methods and techniques
  • Must comply with NIH, Federal, state and University regulations on the safe and ethical use of animals and humans in research
  • Perform related duties as required

Desired

Master’s or PhD in Biostatistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or related field AND 1 year of work experience in a related field OR with at least 2 years of experience working in Biostatistics or Computer Science.

Equivalent education / experience can substitute for minimum qualifications except where prohibited by legal requirements such as license / certificate / registration.)
