Our Prorate and Fuel Tax Services (PRFT) within our Business & Professions Division (BPD) is currently recruiting a Motor Carrier Services Supervisor with a leadership focus and interest in tax collection and customer service.

Washington’s infrastructure requires considerable investment to ensure residents and visitors have safety, comfort, and simplicity as they move around the state.

Our Prorate and Fuel Tax Servicesadministers the state’s fuel tax collection programs, as well as the International Registration Plan (IRP) and International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA), collecting almost $2 billion in annual revenue for the state’s transportation programs to ensure investment continues in state roadways.

Duties

As aMotor Carrier Services Supervisor, you will supervise, direct, and control the work of excise tax examiners across two locations.

You will assign, evaluate, and review the work of your team that is responsible for the proper examination of taxpayer accounts, computation of tax, penalty, interest, fees, assessments and warrants, and proper reporting of liability due.

You will support a team that has varied interactions with customers, to include in-person contact. Identifying your team's upcoming challenges and being proactive will be critical.

Leading a team that works from two separate locations (Olympia and Vancouver, WA) will require your passion for engagement and leadership.

While leading from a distance and in person, your drive and ability to hold the team accountable will determine how effective the entire section can be for DOL long term.

Some of what you will do :

  • Understand and supervise the daily work of your team well enough to guide, mentor, and gauge success.
  • Assign and review the work of staff and instruct staff in approach and compliance to ensure responses are courteous and accurate.
  • Develop, implement, and train on process improvements and work efficiency strategies.
  • Initiate the progressive discipline process as needed to address staff performance issues.
  • Work proactively to notify, correct, and continue to grow staff abilities and goals while ingratiating new staff to the team.

Qualifications

What you will bring to the role :

  • 4 years of experience in accounting, compliance, customer service, auditing, or tax administration.
  • Experience must include two (2) years of experience as a senior, supervisor, or lead in accounting, compliance, customer service, auditing, or tax administration.

Up to two (2) years of relevant accounting, auditing, taxation, or public administration education may substitute year for year for experience.

Associates degree 2 years) OR

Two (2) years of experience as an Excise Tax Examiner 3.

What may help set you apart :

One (1) year of experience in the following : Additional supervisory or lead roles.Using vendor software to perform research inquiries, processing, and registration, etc.

Facilitating group sessions, writing procedures, policies, training, and / or presenting information.

Additional Conditions of employment :

  • Ability to work in-office multiple days per week.
  • Ability to travel statewide and work from the Vancouver, WA office a minimum of two days a week.
