The Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company is looking for Inspectors to join our Engineering Team!
Loss Control Inspectors pride themselves on having the technical knowledge and experience to provide quality inspections, engineering services and business solutions.
The goal is ensuring our customers avoid losses, and recover promptly from losses that do occur on insured equipment. Our Engineering department provides a full suite of services focused on identifying risk to a wide range of customers;
from small dry cleaning operations to high risk, complex accounts such as large utility plants. Services include :
- Jurisdictional inspections of boilers and pressure vessels
- Property-casualty inspections and surveys
- Risk Assessment Surveys
- Claims Investigations
- Electrical risk management surveys
This field based position is an integral part of our commitment to the quality and service we provide for our customers and to their equipment.
The work is varied from day to day and is ideally suited to a self-motivated individual who can work independently. A successful inspector will have excellent communications skills and the ability to work with HSB clients and customers in a professional manor with high integrity.
The position has minimum qualifications of a high school diploma and work experience with boilers and pressure vessels or nuclear reactors.
The required work experience can be reduced if you have an engineering degree.
Our entry level inspectors start with 12 weeks of intensive training to gain the necessary experience and qualifications required to perform inspection during construction, repairs or operation of in-service equipment.
Training is provided annually for all of our inspectors, which is developed and supported by our technical industry experts.

Required :
High school diploma and technical working knowledge of commercial equipment.
Experience operating, maintaining or inspecting boilers, pressure vessels and machinery.
Basic algebra skills
Basic computer knowledge.
Must be an effective communicator in both written and verbal forms.
Meet the required experience and qualifications to obtain the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors commission.
Preferred :
National Board of Boiler & Pressure Vessel Inspectors Commission.
Technical College Graduate.
Engineering degree (BSME, BSEE or BSChE).
Physical Requirements :
This position requires a person to routinely move about at a site facility. As such, candidates for this position must be able to perform the below physical requirements :
- Ability to crawl through 11 X 15 openings into confined spaces. Enter and function in very tight confined spaces.
- Ability to climb vertical ladders and several stories of stairs.
- Ability to climb and function at heights of at least 30 feet, and up to eight(8) to ten (10) stories.
- Ability to perform bending, stretching and twisting motions.
- Ability to withstand temperature variations. Temperature variations could be as much as 70 degrees.
- Ability to walk 3-5 miles.
- Ability to stand for long periods of time and able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
- Ability to lift own body weight while hanging or entering a confined space with associated safety equipment
- Ability to lift equipment up to 50 lbs.
- Visual acuity of 20 / 20 (natural or corrected) and identify colors.
- Ability to hear (corrected) the sounds of equipment operation.
