The Department of Medicine, F. Edward HebertSchool of Medicine, invites applications for the position of Assistant or Associate Professor (tenure eligible track).

The Department ofMedicine is responsible for fostering and assessing the skills, knowledge, and professionalism of students necessary for success in graduatemedical education and military medical practice maintains an academic environment strongly supporting productive basic science and clinicalresearch endeavors fosters academic excellence through effective faculty development programs, periodic faculty review, and strong supportfor academic advancement demonstrates, through a skilled faculty, the role model of a compassionate, dedicated caregiver and teacher aswell as an innovative, ethical clinician scientist supports military readiness with in-depth expertise on nephrology and solid-organtransplant wellness measures, and other internal medicine concerns of particular operational significance fosters academic excellence inprofessional training throughout military graduate medical education and provides public presentations supporting graduate and continuingmedical education on internal medicine and related topics.

Duties : The incumbent will serve as an Assistant orAssociate Professor in the Department of Medicine and as such will be responsible for teaching, research, patient / clinical care andadministrative assignments.

In coordination with other faculty members of the department, assists in planning and developmentof curriculum in a manner so as to integrate the student's knowledge of basic sciences with clinical medicine.

Participates in thedevelopment and organization of specific courses of study which provide practical experience in learning fundamentals of sound history andphysical examination, and diagnosis and evaluation of patients with medical and surgical disorders.

Supervises groups of medicalstudents, interns, residents and postdoctoral graduate assistants at the tutorial level in the clinic and the laboratory.

Responsible forteaching new research techniques, use of appropriate instruments and equipment, and statistical and analytical procedures.

Preparesmaterials for presentation, provides daily supervision, and reviews student performance. Serves as advisor to pre-doctoral and postdoctoralassistants in guiding their training programs.

Prepares and presents lectures in area of major expertise to the entire student body as partof core teaching requirements for USU, SOM curriculum whether in pre-clerkship, clerkship, post-clerkship, or graduate student orpost-doctoral positions and serving as a preceptor or teaching attending at least annually.

Performs patient careincluding all appropriate technical procedures, and supervises all patient care services performed by staff and students in area ofexpertise.

Participates in investigational, research and developmental projects, directs experimental activities, evaluates data,draws conclusions, and publishes results.

Reviews and critiques research and developmental areas, and develops, monitors, and evaluatescontractual research and development arrangements.

Serves as research advisor to graduate students in field of expertise, assists inplanning programs, setting objectives, and evaluating progress.

Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to serving onmajor standing committees; preparing staff reports;

representing the University at professional gatherings delivering lectures;participating in meetings and panel discussions at other institutions and maintaining professional contacts with other medical schools andprofessional organizations throughout the country to locate and exchange information of mutual interest.

QualificationRequirements : The incumbent must bring to this position a minimum of a medical degree (M.D. or D.O.) from an accredited universityor institution, be board-certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology and Fellowship Trained in Transplant Nephrology (or equivalent),maintain an active license to practice medicine in a state, and be credentialed for the full range of specialty practice in a hospitalsetting.

This position requires : experience in teaching medical students and / or residents as well as, experience with quantitativeand / or qualitative methods and analysis.

The incumbent must have a track record of successful teaching, scholarship, and leadership ineducational settings. Familiarity with the structure and culture of military medicine and military hospitals are desirable.

The successfulcandidate must be academically qualified for a faculty appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in accordance with USUHSand SOM academic policies.

This position requires direct patient care and / or clinical activities; as such, the incumbent will besubject to pre-employment and random drug testing requirements under the USUHS Drug-Free Workplace Program.
