Responsibilities

  • Dig deeply into economic mobility issues affecting St. Louis.
  • Convey findings to the public; work with a small team; help grow the region’s economy through fact-based reporting.
  • Balance immediate and longer-term deadlines for a mix of long-form and timely coverage.
  • Capture quality photography of interview subjects; familiarity with short-form video is a plus.
  • Collaborate with the Economic Mobility Lab within the publication.

Qualifications

  • Proven track record of news coverage; ability to talk to the real people behind the data and navigate complicated bureaucracies; ability to get to the bottom of the story even when sources are in disagreement.
  • Experience reporting with clarity on complex data and issues; ability to explain findings to a broad audience.
  • Comfort with deadlines and a mix of long-form and timely pieces; proficiency with short-form video (TikTok, Instagram Reels) is a plus; ability to take good photos of interview subjects.
  • Strong communication skills and editorial judgment.
