The Central Utility Plant Operator is primarily responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of high-pressure boilers and chillers for the heating and cooling of a major Health Sciences facility.

CUP Operators are also responsible for the operation, service, and repair of high-pressure steam boilers involving, high voltage electrical distribution systems, Diesel Generator, Fuel Storage tanks, Automatic Transfer Switches, Centrifugal chillers, and thermal energy storage systems.

Monitors various energy management systems for the facility. Other duties include analyzing and conducting water chemistry testing of chilled water, boilers, closed loop heating systems, cooling towers, reverse osmosis water, and deionized water systems.

The Central Utility Plant Operator is distinguished from the Systems Operator in that the Operator typically works with stationary and centralized equipment that supports the entire Hospital operation.

Under supervision, this position monitors, operates, and maintains high-pressure steam boilers and centrifugal chillers for the campus chilled water system.

Operate, service, and repair stationary power plant equipment also includes, cooling towers, HVAC equipment, Thermal energy storage systems and associated auxiliary equipment.

Support plant operations that ensure continuous plant performance safely and efficiently. Monitor and respond to changes in operating conditions to maintain continuous plant performance.

Perform plant operations, perform work duties and routines, perform minor planned and corrective maintenance, and respond to emergencies as needed.

Perform physical watch stander rounds of the Central Utility Plants per prescribed frequencies and in accordance with established round protocols and recording direction.

Record and report any abnormal conditions to the Lead Central Plant Operator. Assist Lead Central Plant Operator in troubleshooting any plant issues.

This is a watch standing position, which will require maintenance duties. Adhere to policies, procedures, and practices on safety and plant operation instructions.

Medical Center Central Utility Plant Operators (MCCUPO) are responsible for handling incoming calls from customers, and dispatching the building operators to access the customer's call request.

Reviewing and distributing a variety of Facilities Engineering requests. Using their knowledge of the trades or services to dispatch and monitor work orders.

Receive trouble calls and call in necessary personnel during power outages and emergencies. During the emergency situation, the MCCUPO is responsible to make sure all escalation communication has been sent out to Leads, Supervisor, and Managers / Directors.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have a valid California driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Journeyman level Plant Operator with proven experience in support of plant operations.
  • Proven ability to monitor, operate, and maintain high-pressure steam boilers, chilled water systems, cooling towers, building heating systems, HVAC systems and associated auxiliary equipment.
  • Demonstrated Ability to provide customer support and information, as needed, to keep customers satisfied.
  • Ability to effectively deal with the public. Strong ability to effectively communicate orally, both in person and by telephone.
  • Ability to represent the FE department and Medical Center in a friendly, courteous, and professional manner.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Environmental Protection Agency Certification (EPA) 608 Universal Certification or commitment to get certified within six months of hire.
  • Healthcare environment experience.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays to meet the needs of the Medical Center.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range : $102,208 - $102,208 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent : $48.95 - $48.95

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.

The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.

The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
