The CN identifies and implements nursing interventions and evaluates results for a wide variety of patient populations, directs and acts as resource to other members of the nursing team as assigned and promotes compliance and support for policies.

The primary responsibilities for this position consist of providing total, comprehensive, continuous and patient centered care which includes : assessing, documenting, planning, implementing, teaching, developing, and evaluating a comprehensive nursing plan of care;

delivering direct patient care; ensuring patient satisfaction; training and delegating duties; and adhering to University policies and procedures as well as federal, state and local regulations.

Autonomous nursing care is the ability of a nurse to assess and provide nursing actions as appropriate for patient care populations based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge.

The nurse is expected to practice autonomously consistent with ANA Standards of Practice and Professional Performance. Independent judgment is expected to be exercised within the context of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care.

Provides direct patient care to a diversified patient population. Applies knowledge, experience and judgment to determine the importance of a situation, set priorities, and use abstract thought to evaluate clinical situations.

Participates in patient and staff education. Demonstrates leadership skills. Demonstrates accountability for own practices as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Six (6) months of Operating Room nursing experience.
  • Valid California Registered Nurse License without restriction
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or UC Davis Health CPR
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Ability to utilize medical terminology appropriately.
  • Knowledge of current trends in nursing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Perioperative Nurse OR (CNOR) within 1 year of hire
  • One (1) year experience as an Operating Room RN and six (6) months scrubbing experience (can be in a non-nursing or student nurse role)
  • Experience charting in EPIC

Department Overview

Perioperative Services at UC Davis Health encompasses multiple Operating Rooms, Preoperative and Post-Anesthesia Units, and Sterile Processing Departments, across the UC Davis Health Campus.

Surgical care is provided across the entire life spectrum, includes a wide range of inpatient and ambulatory surgical specialties, including (but not limited to : ACS Level 1 Trauma, Bariatric, Burn, Cardiac, Colorectal, Endocrine, ENT, Gynecology, comprehensive Neurosurgery, Oncologic, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic Trauma, comprehensive Orthopedic (Spine, Foot & Ankle, Hand & Hand Trauma), Otolaryngology, Pain, Plastics, Robotics, Thoracic, Transplant, Vascular, , Urology, and Uro-Gyn.

Additionally, our Children's Surgery Center provides comprehensive surgical care in the full-range of surgical specialties in an age-appropriate setting.

This or these positions will be located in the new 48X outpatient surgery center complex.

Department Specific Job Scope

The Operating Room Registered Nurse assumes responsibility and accountability for patients during the perioperative time frame.

The Operating Room Basic Registered Nurse provides surgical patient care by assessing, planning, and implementing the nursing process in the scrub or circulator roles.

  • Essential responsibilities may include, but not limited to : Assisting surgeons in the operating room; work with other members of the surgical team to ensure the operating room is prepared according to type of procedure;
  • work with other members of the surgical team to manage specimens; positions patient safely on the operating table; perform general nursing duties and be competent in OR procedures as verified by specific competencies;
  • demonstrate the ability to facilitate smooth and efficient room turnover and patient flow; perform measures to assure the safety of team members and patients during the perioperative time frame;

provide the patient / family with pre and post operative education; integrate and coordinate patient care throughout the surgical care continuum.

The Operating Room Registered Nurse assumes responsibility and accountability for patients during the intraoperative phase of care during a patients perioperative experience.

Essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following :

Develop and implement an individualized perioperative patient plan of care.

Protect the patient from injury caused by extraneous objects and chemical, electrical, laser, mechanical, and thermal sources.

Perform accounting procedures to protect the patient from unintended retained surgical items.

Perform interventions necessary to ensure that the patient's procedure is performed on the correct site, side, and level.

Performs interventions necessary to ensure safe patient positioning on the surgical table.

Manage specimens according to organizational policy and procedures.

Communicate the patient's status to relevant parties throughout the continuum of care.

Prepare, and administer medications safely and correctly.

Perform interventions to maintain the status of the patient's genitourinary, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological systems and fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balances at or above baseline levels.

Perform interventions to ensure the patient is at or returned to normothermia at the conclusion of the immediate postoperative period.

Perform interventions to protect the patient from surgical site infection.

Protect the patient's rights, dignity, and privacy by acting as a patient advocate.

Provide age-specific, culturally competent, ethical care within legal standards of practice.

Assure readiness for each patient using a team-based approach to room preparation, including the post procedure cleaning of the room and preparation of room for subsequent patients to ensure the patient moves through the perioperative continuum of care timely.

Document nursing care accurately, completely, and legibly in the electronic medical record.

Function as a scrub person during operative and other invasive procedures by assembling, preparing, and organizing sterile supplies and equipment, performing accounting procedures with the RN circulator, assisting with placement of sterile drapes, providing instruments and supplies to the surgical team during the procedure, maintaining an organized sterile field, ensuring sterility of the field and taking corrective actions as needed, and preparing sterile dressings.

Clean and prepare surgical instruments for processing and transports them to the decontamination areas.

Collaborate effectively with all members of the perioperative team to assure safe, effective quality of care for each patient and family member.

Coordinates transfer of care as applicable.

Performs interventions to assure the safety of team members and patients during the intraoperative period.

This position is directly responsible for providing support to Perioperative Services locations across UC Davis Health.
