Position Summary : Exempt position directly responsible for the supervision, assignment and coordination of the Substation Construction and Maintenance activities to ensure a productive workforce that supports all divisional, departmental, site and corporate goals while in accordance with all company policies and local, state, and federal regulations.

The Substation Area Supervisor will direct the work and provide technical assistance to subordinates assigned to assist him / her and craft employees working under lump sum and fixed unit price contracts.

The Substation Area Supervisor requires a minimum 12 years of continuous experience and will be responsible for identifying, properly tracking and reporting of completed job units to the Project Manager or Area Manager.

The Substation Area Supervisor will participate in job estimation and client development, and will be expected to attend pre-bid meetings and to conduct client pre-construction meetings.

The Substation Area Supervisor will be responsible for the safety, efficient scheduling, and work quality of his crews. This is a supervisory position.

This qualified individual will possess the skills to schedule and oversee multiple crews and should possess the drive and ambition to develop into the position of Area Manager.

Essential Functions :

  • Oversees job to ensure all crews are working safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair, testing, adjusting and troubleshooting work of substation equipment / systems which includes, but is not limited to, work involving the following : Concrete Foundations, ground grids, and steel erection Buswork (High and Low Voltage) Airbreak / Hookstick Switches Control Cable Terminations (High / Low Voltage) Control Buildings Conduit and duck banks Capacitor bank installations 23kv- 230 kv Transformers, regulators and circuit breakers Circuit Switchers, motor-operated and manual switches
  • Responsible for maintaining Company vehicles, test equipment and tools in good working conditions
  • Manage crews that frequently work with energized high voltage systems requiring skill and care to protect the lives of themselves and others.
  • Ensures that all employees and crews are in compliance with Pike safety policies, have required safety training, equipment and information.
  • Responsible for managing / directing six or more substation crews.
  • Responsible for the proper allocation of personnel, equipment and tooling for maximized safety, productivity, quality and customer schedule.
  • Must be capable of climbing and working at heights up to 125 feet above ground.

Other Requirements :

  • Must possess or be capable of obtaining a Commercial Drivers’ License.
  • Must supply own personal hand tools required by the company for this work.
  • Must supply own safety toed work boots.
  • Must be capable of lifting in excess of 50 lbs.
  • Must be capable of working in confined spaces / areas.
  • Must be able to work independently or with others.
  • Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
  • Operational experience of various types of heavy equipment : Bucket, derrick and boom trucks Backhoes, excavators and skid steer loaders Articulating Man-lifts Pressure Diggers Trenchers Track Crawler Loader / Backhoe Rough Terrain Telescopic Forklifts
  • Willing to work over-time or long hours during emergency conditions and / or when requested. Schedules can change frequently and with short notice.
  • 90% Travel Required
  • Capable of following Company safety rules and policies.
  • Must have extensive knowledge of construction standard practices, techniques, quality requirements, applicable codes and standards.
  • Must be capable of working in close proximity of energized substation equipment.
  • Must interpret substation structural drawings (. elevations, plan views, section views, grounding details, and foundation plans) and communicate with customers and subordinates.
  • Ability to accurately appraise technical situations and recommend resolutions to problems.
  • Ability to administer coaching, mentoring, and performance management.
  • Ability to develop and interpret a material list, bid packages, scope documents, schedules, and budgets required in work performance.
  • Ability to trace out phasing in a substation and verify to the three line diagrams.
  • Proficient knowledge in all aspects of substation systems.
  • Ability to determine the proper phase shift and rotation in paralleling transformer banks.
  • Able to direct the daily work of the crews.
  • Knowledge of various types of construction contracts.
  • Perform employee evaluations.
  • Interview, hire, and terminate employees
  • Ability to interface with contractors, designers, vendors, and other parties connected with the project.
  • Experience as a substation working foreman preferred.
  • Check, verify and approve time sheet and routine reports.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel preferred.

The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms.

Work Environment :

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration.

The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.

This position is performed in outside weather conditions.
