Technical Director- Marine Operations

This role can be based out of the Ports of Benicia / Oakland OR Port Hueneme OR Ports of LA / LB

You will become the technical expert for a fleet of new vessels and learn their proprietary equipment and systems inside and out to be able to troubleshoot, innovate and ensure compliance with regulatory authorities.

This role requires a strong understanding of systems engineering, HVAC and electrical.

Reports To : Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

Job Summary : The Technical Director will be the technical expert and will deep knowledge of systems related to a fleet of specialized barges.

This role requires an individual with extensive maritime engineering, electrical, HVAC, systems engineering experience. You must be willing to go on site- in port- and put eyes on the vessels to be able to provide input to vessel staff and the CEO.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Fleet Management : Oversee the technical management of the company's fleet, ensuring vessels are maintained to the highest standards of safety, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Regulatory Compliance : Ensure all vessels comply with international, national, and local maritime regulations, including safety, environmental, and operational standards.
  • Maintenance and Repairs : Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs. Coordinate and supervise all repairs and dry-docking activities.
  • Budgeting and Cost Control : Prepare and manage budgets for fleet maintenance and operations. Monitor expenses and implement cost-saving measures without compromising safety and quality.
  • Vendor Management : Liaise with suppliers and service providers to procure necessary parts and services. Negotiate contracts and ensure timely delivery and quality of services.
  • Team Leadership : Lead, mentor, and develop the technical team. Foster a culture of continuous improvement and teamwork.
  • Technical Documentation : Maintain accurate records of all technical activities, including maintenance logs, inspection reports, and certification documents.
  • Emergency Response : Develop and implement emergency response plans. Act as a technical point of contact during emergency situations, coordinating with relevant authorities and stakeholders.
  • Innovation and Improvement : Identify and implement technological advancements and process improvements to enhance fleet performance and efficiency.
  • Stakeholder Communication : Regularly report to senior management on fleet status, technical issues, and improvement initiatives.

Provide technical expertise and support to other departments as required.

Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in systems engineering.
  • Extensive knowledge of maritime regulations, safety standards, and environmental compliance.
  • Proven track record of managing a diverse fleet of vessels, including maintenance, repairs, and dry-docking.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in using fleet management software and other relevant technical tools.

Work Environment :

  • This position may require travel to various ports in CA
  • The role involves a mix of office-based work and hands-on technical troubleshooting and analysis.
