Job Title : Medical Laboratory Scientist / Technician
Job Summary
The Medical Laboratory Scientist / Technician performs a variety of routine and complex clinical laboratory tests and procedures to assist in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.
This role requires detailed knowledge of laboratory techniques, equipment, and safety protocols. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Laboratory Testing :
- Perform and interpret a wide range of laboratory tests, including hematology, chemistry, microbiology, immunology, and blood banking.
- Prepare specimens for analysis, ensuring proper identification and handling.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, including analyzers, microscopes, and other diagnostic instruments.
- Quality Control :
- Conduct quality control procedures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results.
- Monitor and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and equipment to maintain optimal performance.
- Participate in proficiency testing and other quality assurance activities.
- Specimen Collection and Processing :
- Collect blood, tissue, and other specimens from patients as required.
- Process and store specimens according to established protocols and procedures.
- Data Management :
- Accurately record and report test results in electronic health records (EHR) and laboratory information systems (LIS).
- Maintain detailed records of tests performed, quality control activities, and equipment maintenance.
- Safety and Compliance :
- Follow all safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment.
- Adhere to regulatory requirements and standards, including those set by CAP, CLIA, and OSHA.
- Properly dispose of biohazardous materials and waste.
- Communication :
- Communicate test results and findings to physicians and other healthcare professionals.
- Provide technical support and guidance to laboratory staff and trainees.
- Professional Development :
- Stay current with advancements in laboratory science through continuing education and training.
- Participate in laboratory meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities.
Requirements
- Experience : Minimum of 1+ year of experience in a clinical laboratory setting preferred.
- Education :
- Medical Laboratory Scientist : Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science or related field.
- Medical Laboratory Technician : Associate’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or related field.
- Certifications :
- Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Skills :
- Technical Proficiency : Strong knowledge of laboratory techniques, equipment, and safety protocols.
- Attention to Detail : Ability to perform accurate and precise laboratory testing.
- Analytical Skills : Strong problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
