Registered Veterinary Technician II - Urgent Care/Emergency (Swing A)

The CSU VTH exists to provide exceptional veterinary care and service to the community while educating the next generation of veterinarians at a tertiary level teaching hospital with veterinary trauma center designation.

Critical Care Services provides medical care for small animals and exotics on an emergency basis and intensive 24-hour care to patients who are admitted for extended treatment.

We simultaneously provide clinical instruction to professional veterinary medical students, interns, residents, veterinary technicians, graduate veterinarians, and others;

conduct and support clinical research; and provide referral outreach to clients and referring veterinarians .

This position is expected to work Monday through Friday, 2pm to 12am or 4pm to 2am depending on the needs of the UC unit and employee.

This is an essential worker position and must be willing and able to report to work as directed to perform essential and / or emergency services without delay or interruption.

The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position. This position must :

  • Triage all incoming emergency cases and assess the client situation for optimal care.
  • Stabilizes emergent, medically dynamic patients.
  • Assist and initiate advanced procedures such as pericardiocentesis and positive pressure ventilation
  • Monitors patients to assess response to treatment or need to initiate treatment.
  • Coordinates and provides care of ill or injured animals with doctors, students and other staff, including nursing care and technical procedures.
  • Provides medically-experienced phone triage / screening and support.
  • Facilitates coordination and communication between appropriate hospital departments, clients, and referring veterinarians.
  • Provides clinical and didactic instruction to professional veterinary medical students, interns, residents, technicians, graduate veterinarians and others.
  • Directs activities of Urgent Care and Critical Care Unit, oversees maintenance, charging and provides continuity of care.

A combination of signing bonus + moving expenses available $2, max for successful candidates. Required Job Qualifications

  • Registered as a Veterinary Technician (VT) or Provisional Veterinary Technician (PVT) through the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA).
  • Graduate of accredited veterinary technician program with greater than 2 years experience in veterinary emergency medicine *Please note, a transcript or diploma must be attached to this application to demonstrate graduation from the vet tech program.

SUBSTITUTIONS : Candidates can qualify without graduation from a veterinary technician program if they demonstrate 3+ years of veterinary emergency medicine experience.

Essential Duties Job Duty Category Patient Care Management Duty / Responsibility

  • Provides and oversees efficient, optimal patient care including : triage, assessment, stabilization, treatment, monitoring, and restraint.
  • Identifies relevant changes and recommends adjustments to patients management. ·
  • Collaborates with students, interns, residents, faculty clinicians, rDVMs, and clients to assist in formulating a diagnoses and optimal treatment plans.

This is done by evaluating patient status, response to therapy, collecting diagnostic samples and interpreting results.

  • Assumes leadership in emergencies in absence of DVM.
  • Provides clinical and technical expertise such as : intravenous (peripheral and central catheters), arterial, and urinary catheterization;
  • fluid and drug administration; intravenous and arterial blood sampling; point of care ultrasound; EKG and blood gas collection / interpretation;
  • direct and indirect blood pressure monitoring / evaluation; pulse oximetry; capnography; operation and trouble-shooting of all specialty-related equipment;
  • thoracocentesis and continuous evacuation; pericardiocentesis; emergency anesthesia; cystocentesis; multi-parameter monitoring;

positive pressure ventilation and initiating and directing CPR.

Percentage Of Time 60% Job Duty Category Teaching, Mentoring and Continuing Education of Students Duty / Responsibility

  • Develops knowledge and skills of Professional Veterinary Medical Program students, interns, residents, technicians, and CE participants by providing clinical instruction on the principles and practice of veterinary emergency and critical care medicine
  • Presents staff in-service training by illustrating new or reviewed specialty topics and / or techniques.
  • Assists in training new personnel.
  • Orients new students and provides coaching and feedback.
  • Teaches and models quality nursing care.
  • Maintains currency and increases knowledge of field by attending assigned training and continuing education, both in service and self-study.

Percentage Of Time 20% Job Duty Category Communication Duty / Responsibility

  • Provides knowledgeable onsite or phone triage / screening for ill or injured animals presenting to the Urgent Care Service.
  • Communicates and coordinates with clients or referring / primary veterinarians to obtain relevant history, prior diagnostics, etc.

  • Provides information and feedback to help guide clients through decision making.
  • Communicates and coordinates with reception and other hospital departments to facilitate timely and efficient assessments, diagnostics, stabilization, treatment and / or transfer to appropriate hospital services.
  • Provides medical updates and communicates concerns to primary and ancillary clinicians, students and other staff to coordinate patient care.
  • Practices and promotes prompt, positive, professional interpersonal relations and communications.
  • Problem solves and provides consultation to students, staff, faculty, and community .

  • Organizes and directs activities of unit during duty shift when necessary.
  • Prioritizes cases and procedures as well as ensures completion and documentation of treatments.
  • Monitors and enforces policies and procedures (including biosecurity and controlled substance regulations).
  • Enters patient charges into computer.
  • Maintains supplies, equipment, and facility.
  • Provides after-hours hospital support and facilitates emergency patient admission.
