Frederick Douglass Community Center (885 Columbus Avenue)

$17.50 / hour

The Frederick Douglass Community Center provides essential services to children, youth, and families on the Upper West Side, particularly the residents of the neighboring Frederick Douglass Houses.

The center includes a recently refurbished gymnasium, an outdoor playground, and classrooms for early childhood education and after-school services.

Position Summary :

Reporting to the Center Director, the Program Facilitator (Group Leader) will work with a group of children ages 5 to 14 years old in the after-school and summer camp programs to plan and implement activities based on identified curricula in a manner that motivates and engages children and strengthens their academic and social-emotional skills.

Essential Duties :

  • Understand and promote the organization's Mission, Vision, and Core Values to ensure alignment with organizational policies and procedures
  • Serve as a positive role model for children and youth, consistently displaying School Age Values.
  • Develop and maintain an effective system of classroom management that promotes pro-social behavior and discipline.
  • Plan and implement high-quality, age-appropriate activities, including academic support, enrichment, physical activity, healthy living, SEL, and leadership development, based on identified curricula.
  • Co-supervise a group of 20 to 25 children (ages 5 to 14) during program hours
  • Assist the Activity Specialist with curriculum implementation for the assigned group
  • Supervise and assist children during special projects and field trips, which may include some weekends, holidays, or special programming
  • Collect, organize, assess, and celebrate the work of youth participants
  • Engage with parents and maintain open communication to better understand and address youth needs
  • Attend curriculum and program meetings with the Program Director or relevant personnel as scheduled
  • Participate in internal and external professional development aligned with educational standards
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and resource-rich classroom environment to ensure activities are conducted efficiently and on time
  • Escort children to and from all activities, including those outside the center
  • Maintain participant case files and documentation of all required services and activities
  • Submit weekly schedules, reports, and other required documentation in a timely manner
  • Take daily attendance and report any absences to the Program Director
  • Collaborate with other agency youth programs and partners
  • Maintain positivity within the worksite (onsite / offsite) and offer encouragement to all students
  • Work a flexible schedule to meet program needs, including occasional evening and weekend hours as needed
  • Perform other tasks as assigned

Minimum Qualifications :

  • High School Diploma / Equivalency required; Associate's degree in a related field preferred
  • Two years of experience working with students in appropriate school level preferred

Key Competencies :

  • Knowledge of positive youth development practices
  • Ability to engage with diverse youth and staff populations
  • Strong collaborative skills for working within an interdisciplinary team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Bilingual (English / Spanish) a plus
