Summary

Job Description

Entity / Organization : MUSCP - (MUSC Physicians)

Job Purpose : Full time NP / PA working with the psychiatry team embedded in the Emergency Department to provide psychiatric consults and management of psychiatric patients who present to the MUSC ED, under the supervision of a psychiatrist.

Will work as part of a multidisciplinary team and work with a team of ED based psychiatrists as part of the Mental Health ICCE, within the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences.

Fair Labor Standards Act Status : Salaried - Exempt

Hours per week : 14, 10-hour shifts per month with 1 additional 10 hour shift each quarter.

Scheduled Work Hours / Shift : The standard scheduled shifts are : 7AM to 5PM, 1PM to 11PM and 10PM to 8AM with 14 shifts per month required for full-time positions.

The rotating APPs will work majority shifts 7AM to 5PM or 1PM to 11PM with some nights / weekends and holidays required.

There are four additional 10-hour shifts built into the schedule per year, one per quarter. This includes coverage of the psychiatry D-POD area as well as the adult EmPATH unit.

Patient Population Age Range : 0-Death

Required Minimum Training and Education : Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant.

Or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, as identified below.

Preferred experience : Minimum of one year of mental health provider experience as an APP.

Degree of Supervision : Physician Assistant or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse will be assigned a Primary Supervising / Collaborating Physician employed by MUSC and will report directly to this physician.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations : Currently licensed (or eligible) in the state of South Carolina as a Physician Assistant by the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners or as an PMHNP with the SC Board of Nursing.

Requires certification in Basic Life Support (BLS). If BLS is not current, provider must enroll and have received certificate by start date.

DHEC and DEA license applications must be submitted prior to first day.

Job Duties : Provides direct care to patients through the following activities :

  • Perform comprehensive mental health evaluations to determine the appropriate level of care for the patient. Will include management of psychotropic medications and all care needs
  • Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations
  • Evaluates and treats based on history, mental status examination, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guideline
  • Performs the following therapeutic procedures in accordance with procedural privileges, skill and proficiency as approved by the Clinical Division Chief
  • Initiates referrals to other health care provides, and / or consults with the attending physician or the collaborating physician when appropriate
  • Documents and bills for direct care provided
  • Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice
  • Performs and participates in quality / performance improvement activities and clinical research, when appropriate
  • Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization
  • Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education
  • Potential to precept trainees at MUSC enrolled as an advanced practice provider trainee; and facilitates the learning of other new team members
  • APRN or PA must maintain licenses, certifications, CNEs / CMEs, etc. as required by applicable policies and state law
  • Works to understand the needs of patients and their families, and assists with care planning and goal setting, working to resolve conflicts when they arise.
  • Assumes responsibility for management of care for assigned patient caseload, establishing treatment plans with collaborating / supervising physician and monitoring treatment response and clinical practice.
  • Monitor care when delivered, clinical expert, role model and teacher / preceptor for nurses, students, interns and residents.

Physical Requirements : Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands / wrists / elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions.

Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required. Maintain 20 / 40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors.

Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and / or carry objects weighing 50 lbs (+ / -) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs of force, lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs.

Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined / cramped spaces.

Job Description

Master's degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing and two years clinical experience required, at least one year of which must have been in a specialty area of care.

Certification as a Nurse Practitioner specific to the area of employment required unless a new graduate. New graduates must be certification eligible upon employment, and obtain certification within six months of employment.

Requires licensure as a Registered Nurse and hold official recognition as a Nurse Practitioner from the South Carolina Board of Nursing.

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR / AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
