About the Role

The Times Culture desk aims to be the preeminent destination for television coverage. We publish illuminating and memorable pieces that offer trusted guidance to help people live fuller, more considered lives. We are seeking a multifaceted critic with deep knowledge and a lively writing style who can enrich readers’ understanding and appreciation of television, streaming and video programming (scripted, reality, documentary, news, talk shows, and platforms like YouTube and TikTok). You should be able to write reviews, newsy essays and appraisals for a national and global audience, weighing in on pivotal moments in television and related online conversations when appropriate. You will help readers learn about important series and content from around the world and deepen their understanding of performers, creators and craftspeople who bring television to life. You should be a dynamic, digital-first writer comfortable with new story forms and strong visual, audio and video components, and be prepared to collaborate with a large team across the department and newsroom.

Responsibilities

• Regularly write reviews on deadline.
• Write critic's notebooks, appraisals and other features, including quick-turnaround items based on the news.
• Routinely use alternate story formats and multimedia as part of your work and criticism.
• Participate in audio and video storytelling, including podcasts and on-camera criticism.
• Stay informed about emerging content and trends on digital video platforms like YouTube.
• Write service-oriented pieces drawing on your critical insights.
• During awards season, participate in conversations and live coverage efforts as needed.
• Contribute to brainstorming meetings for TV and pop culture coverage.
• Demonstrate support and understanding of our journalistic independence and mission.
• Report to the TV Editor.

The annual base pay range for this role is between $124,979.94 - $170,000 USD.
