Candidate identifies, recruits and instructs students deemed to have a high degree of difficulty of being promoted into the next grade level, achieving graduation, and / or making a successful transition from school to a career with advancement opportunities.

The Specialist is responsible for fully implementing the JAG Model into an assigned school and achieving process standards and performance goals.

DUTIES :

Provides appropriate curriculum and ensures students achieve specific JAG competencies through classroom instruction; teaches through a variety of methods including lecture, hands-on activities, and team teaching;

tailors the program and teaching methods for the needs of each specific student, and implements an intervention strategy for each individual using an Individualized Development Plan.

Ensures an appropriate pool of students by directly recruiting students, and obtaining referrals from an in-school Advisory Committee consisting of school personnel;

holds interviews with prospective candidates and those making referrals to determine, using JAG guidelines, the appropriateness of the prospective student for the program.

  • Administers testing programs including JAG pre- / post-tests and career interest surveys.
  • Ensures positive perceptions of the JAG-Indiana within schools by developing and maintaining positive, effective working relationships with school personnel including teachers, administrators, students and members of the in-school Advisory Committee.
  • Advocates for the program and develops a pool of effective community support resources by working with employers, parents, civic groups and legislators to build awareness of and support for the program;

develops job opportunities, participates in public relations activities, attends meetings and speaks to various community groups.

Builds appreciation for teamwork, sense of belonging, and commitment to community service among JAG-Indiana students by organizing and serving as advisor to a JAG Career Association chapter;

creates training opportunities through hands-on activities, film presentations, guest speakers, and workshops; assists with civic and social opportunities.

Provides students with guidance, counseling, and support within appropriate limits; refers students to additional support services on an as-needed basis;

takes responsibility for learning and complying with school policies such as mandated reporting, discipline, attendance, and the like.

Complies with all JAG and WIA documentation requirements in a timely fashion including contacts and activities involving students, employers, and other groups;

develops and maintains a well-organized filing system. Records information and data daily using the online Electronic National Data Management System (e-NDMS).

It is understood that 10-15 minutes per day is required to maintain the electronic data base.

  • Assists students in finding and maintaining quality employment and / or post-secondary educational programs upon graduation;
  • works closely with students and employers for 12 months after the end of the school year to ensure a satisfactory employment outcome;

develops a plan for contacts with non-graduates to ensure effective transition to employment or additional education.

  • Participates in staff, regional and national statewide meetings, and staff development activities.
  • Performs selected school-related functions.
  • Participates in field trips.
  • Completes special projects and other projects and duties as assigned by the Regional Director.

I. JOB REQUIREMENTS :

  • Bachelors degree in social service, counseling, business, education, or a related discipline is preferred. Equivalent combination of training, education and experience may be considered.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age and ability to meet all hiring requirements, including passage of drug test and background check.
  • Experience working with youth accompanied by knowledge of adolescent development issues.
  • Skills in human relations, leadership, supervision and motivational techniques.
  • Ability to work 12 months per year.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities.
  • Ability to establish the appropriate boundaries while developing and nurturing supportive relationships with students.
  • Ability to educate a variety of constituencies and interested parties about the program by developing ongoing relationships and making formal presentations.
  • Ability to develop curriculum and educational opportunities consistent with the JAG model.
  • Willing to work in a highly accountable and performance-based program.
  • Knowledge of and ability to provide training to clientele on resume preparation, proper interviewing skills / conduct, and networking skills.
  • Working knowledge of standard office procedures, and ability to apply such knowledge to a variety of interrelated processes, tasks, and operations.
  • Working knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation, and ability to conduct public presentations and prepare detailed written reports as required.
  • Ability to properly operate standard office equipment, including computer, printer, calculator, shredder, and telephone.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other JobWorks departments, various community organizations, social service agencies, educational institutions, various employers, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.
  • Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of department information and records according to state requirements.
  • Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
  • Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate / hostile persons.
  • Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and work with others in a team environment.
  • Ability to work on several tasks at the same time, often under time pressure.
  • Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to compare or observe similarities and differences between data, people, or things.
  • Ability to compile, analyze and evaluate data, make determinations, and present findings in oral or written form.
  • Ability to file, post, mail materials, and maintain accurate and organized records.
  • Ability to occasionally work extended hours, weekends, and travels out of town, but typically not overnight.
  • Possession of valid drivers license and demonstrated safe driving record.

Candidate performs a broad array of duties that are not directly related to one another. Analysis and independent judgment is needed in selecting the appropriate guidelines, instructions or rules to apply to specific tasks.

III. RESPONSIBILITY :

Candidate uses standard departmental practices, policies, and procedures to apply to specific situations and tasks. Unusual situations or problems with irate clients are discussed with supervisor.
