Are you looking for a position in your community and like to work outdoors? If so, this may be the position for you! The City of Wylie is seeking a Utility Technician in our Utilities Division.

The selected candidate will be responsible for accurately reading and recording consumer water meters. Records readings using automated device.

Performs general maintenance on meters; assists in the installation, maintenance and repair of water distribution system infrastructure, facilities and appurtenances.

Installs new meters and implements meter change-out program. Uses computer, hand held device, tools associated with the trade or other technology, material and equipment to perform assigned duty functions.

Supervision is provided by the Customer Service Manager.

The Customer Service Division works four ten hour days each week.

Essential Job Functions

• Reads and records consumer meter readings using automated reading device.
• Works with Windows-based meter reading software and equipment.
• Performs downloads of user history from radio read metering system.
• Installs new meters in new locations.
• Performs meter change-out program.
• Performs general meter maintenance.
• Performs inspections to detect faulty meters and leakage.
• Tests meters for accuracy and replace defective meters.
• Collects water samples, records sample data, and delivers samples for testing.
• Flushes fire hydrants in conjunction with the monthly flushing program.
• Performs fire hydrant flow tests; paints hydrants; locates, operates and marks distribution system valves.
• Performs minor pump station and water reservoir maintenance and inspections.
• Assists with non-compliant bulk trash issues. Follows up and distributes notices to non-compliant customers.
• Drives City vehicles in need of maintenance or repair to the garage; picks up vehicles when repairs are completed.
• Assumes responsibility for safe operation, care and appearance of assigned City vehicle; reports maintenance needs to immediate supervisor.
• Interacts effectively, respectfully and courteously with public and co-workers.
• Accepts and seeks training to maintain high level of service and to stay current with changes in technology.
• Performs job duties with minimum supervision.
• Reports for work regularly and on time; rarely absent. Works overtime and call-outs as necessary.
• Operates a motor vehicle in carrying out the business of the department and the City.
• Performs as a responsible steward of the public trust and strives for excellence in public service, enhancing the quality of life for all.
• Acts in a civil, respectful manner at all times to management, co-workers and others.
• Other duties as may be assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent. One to three years' experience in meter services or related field. Previous meter reading / services and water distribution system experience preferred.

Valid Driver License. Must have Texas Driver License within 60 days of hire. Certifications including Class B or C Water Distribution Operator, Customer Service Inspector and / or Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester are a plus, but are not required.

Completion of National Incident Management System (NIMS) training courses as outlined by Emergency Management after hire.

Retirement benefits with Texas Municipal Retirement System. Contributions by payroll deduction. Employee contributes at 7% level.
