Job Description

SENIOR HUMAN RESOURCES (HR) ASSISTANT , Biological Engineering (BE) (part-time, 25 hrs / wk.), to perform a variety of complex and diverse duties and transactions in support of BE’s human resources activities.

  • Will advise and assist faculty and staff on general HR matters, policies, and procedures, referring more complex inquiries as necessary;
  • process a variety of HR transactions (e.g., postdoctoral, visitor, staff, and affiliate appointments) and coordinate with Payroll as needed;
  • prepare new hire paperwork and process appointments, ensuring a smooth transition and onboarding for new hires according to established guidelines;
  • collect and coordinate the completion of the necessary paperwork for appointment extensions and terminations; interface with temp agencies and track temporary employees;
  • oversee the BE visiting student program; track expiring visas and coordinate new visa applications and renewals with the International Scholars Office (ISchO);
  • review and approve weekly timesheets for students and employees; handle and maintain the department’s confidential personnel files;

and perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • REQUIRED : high school diploma or its equivalent; five years of HR experience; proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, including Word and Excel;
  • excellent organizational, problem-solving, customer service, interpersonal, and verbal and written communication skills;
  • meticulous attention to detail; initiative and self-motivation; flexible approach to responsibilities and ability to adapt to changing work conditions / assignments;

and sound judgment and discretion with confidential, highly sensitive, and personal information. Must be able to work and seek out answers and / or resources independently and take responsibility for own actions, follow through on tasks, and collaborate as part of a team.

PREFERRED : bachelor’s degree in HR management, communications, or a related field; and MIT experience.
