Role Summary : The Educational Interpreter plays a vital role in facilitating communication among students who are deaf or hard of hearing, their peers, classroom teachers, and other school personnel.

This position involves providing interpreting and support services, tutoring, and active participation in the school’s educational team.

The interpreter ensures that communication remains uninterrupted and effective, enabling students who are deaf or hard of hearing to fully engage in their educational experience.

Performance Responsibilities :

Serve as a communication facilitator by providing expressive and voice interpreting for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in general education classes.

Under the direction of the classroom teacher, provide tutoring / review services as necessary without interrupting interpreting tasks.

Assist with the setup of note-taking services for students when required.

Actively participate in educational team activities, including team meetings, IEP conferences, and informal staffings, providing valuable input on communication strategies.

Serve as a liaison between students who are deaf or hard of hearing, their hearing peers, staff, and faculty members.

Lead or assist in providing in-services to students, staff, and parents about sign language, Deaf culture, and interpreting.

Provide interpreting for school functions, extracurricular activities, and parent meetings as requested, with compensation agreed upon in advance for services outside normal school hours.

Perform other duties assigned by the principal, ensuring interpreting remains the primary responsibility.

Utilize scheduled preparation time for previewing materials, conferencing with teachers, recording data, researching signs, etc.

Maintain confidentiality and uphold professional standards as outlined in the Code of Ethics of the National Registry of Interpreter

Required Qualifications :

Proficiency in American Sign Language, Manually Coded English, Pidgin Signed English, and / or Oral Interpreting.

Strong communication skills to effectively liaise between students, peers, and staff.

Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold professional standards as delineated in the Code of Ethics of the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.

Ability to serve as a liaison between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and their hearing peers, staff, and faculty members.

Ability to lead or assist in providing in-services regarding sign language, deafness, Deaf culture, interpreting, and consumer education.

Desired Qualifications :

Previous experience in an educational setting.

Familiarity with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and team meeting participation.

Experience with tutoring and providing review services to students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
