MAIN PURPOSE OF POSITION :

The Business Development Specialist will work as part of a high performing team to ensure that MSH consistently delivers at or above long-term revenue goals.

  • The Business Development Specialist plays a key role in all aspects of new business development at MSH through three key functions : (1) supporting MSH's technical, programs, and field teams to position MSH to win new business;
  • 2) supporting development of large, complex proposals for public and private funders and managing proposal development for smaller bids, contributing to a highly competitive win rate;

and (3) contributing to the development and improvement of business development tools and resources.

  • Contribute to the development of a multi-year pipeline, budget, and targets in line with organizational strategy.
  • In alignment with MSH's technical, donor, and geographic priorities, serve as the positioning lead to ensure up-to-date knowledge of donors and the health landscape;

manage relationships with MSH staff, potential partners, and consultants; and identify new business leads. This includes working collaboratively with technical, programs, and field staff as well as external stakeholders to develop and implement intelligence gathering and positioning strategies to strengthen MSH's competitiveness for winning new business.

Consider potential opportunities, intelligence, and information for general positioning and / or specific opportunities;

prepare analyses for specific bid recommendations, including internal and external resource needs.

  • Facilitate the review of new opportunities through the bid decision process.
  • Coordinate the proposal development process, including developing and managing a calendar and outline for the technical and cost proposals;
  • coordinating team communications through meetings and email and ensuring clarity of roles and responsibilities of team members;
  • elevating issues to Senior Management, collecting and tracking proposal-related information and disseminating information to team members;

and compiling and sending questions to donors.

  • Coordinate logistics for strategy and other proposal-related meetings.
  • Draft management plans, institutional capability statements, and past performance references, staffing sections, CVs, skills matrices, and implementation plans and other sections / annexes as needed.

Work with the technical team to develop graphics and other visuals to meet the requirements of a solicitation and showcase the work of MSH.

  • Facilitate communication between the cost and technical team members to ensure the technical strategy / proposal is integrated with the corresponding cost proposal.
  • Assist the TSL in coordinating with the Cost Proposal Unit to develop best value costing strategies and ensure a unified technical and costing strategy.
  • Coordinate color reviews by internal and external reviewers. May also be assigned to review drafts for issues of presentation, compliance of response, and responsiveness to bid document.
  • With the TSL, identify potential local and international partners, facilitate discussions, and negotiate pre-teaming agreements and teaming agreements (including scopes of work).
  • Monitor and liaise with Talent Acquisition, technical, and SBDP staff to develop a sound staffing strategy.
  • Ensure the responsiveness and compliance of proposals against solicitation requirements.
  • Copy edit proposals and annexes as needed.
  • May be responsible for production of the final technical proposal, including formatting the proposal in Word and saving proposals in PDF, as well official submission.
  • Coordinate final proposal development process debrief and donor debrief meetings.
  • Save all final materials in shared folders, etc.

Increase country engagement - %10

Strengthen engagement with country team colleagues and support field-based business development activities and preparations for new and follow-on projects, including reviewing internal and external evaluations of projects.

Advance MSH partnerships - %5

  • Assist SBDP and technical teams to identify and cultivate partnering opportunities (including strategic partnerships as necessary) and to establish new institutional partners and manage existing ones.
  • Assist MSH in positioning by participating in marketing events, conferences, and donor outreach events.

Team effectiveness and management - %10

  • Foster, build, and maintain MSH staff capacity to support new business opportunities.
  • Assist in the development and improvement of BD tools and resources, including procedures, templates, and trainings.
  • Liaise with field, technical, and programs teams to develop tools and processes that integrate business development elements and perspectives to ensure closer collaboration and coordination.
  • Maintain information in MSH's business systems (Salesforce, Costpoint, SharePoint, etc.).

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED MINIMUM EDUCATION :

A bachelor's degree.

REQUIRED MINIMUM EXPERIENCE :

  • 3+ years of related experience is required.
  • Experience in international public health highly preferred.

KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS :

  • Experience in aspects of the business development lifecycle, such as supporting capture / positioning or contributing to proposal development.
  • Knowledge of or interest in proposal management standards.
  • Experience with major donors like USAID or other USG agencies (CDC, MCC) and / or with FCDO, Gavi, The Global Fund, UN agencies, foundations preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines with attention to detail and quality.
  • Experienced in cultivating and maintaining effective working relationships with all levels of internal stakeholders across an organization as well as external stakeholders.
  • Excellent research, data analysis / synthesis, and presentation skills.
  • Strong written and verbal English-language communication skills; knowledge of a second language preferred.
  • Ability to contribute with increasing levels of responsibility for proposal development and across the business development lifecycle for a range of donors.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to handle the high stress environment of business development with diplomacy and a sense of humor.
  • Ability to initiate and organize work; think critically; establish priorities and make decisions in a time sensitive environment;

and meet deadlines with attention to detail and quality.

  • Ability to work in a highly matrixed and complex environment to achieve common goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrated good judgment, ability to solve problems and / or elevate issues needing support, and ability to work proactively to follow through on activities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS :

Ability to travel within the US and to countries where MSH and / or its donors operate.

The expected salary range for this position is : $50,000.00 - $64,000.00 annually (U.S. locations only).
