As a Student Services Advisor within the College of Health and Human Services, you’ll play a pivotal role in guiding and supporting undergraduate students, primarily within the School of Public Health.

Working closely with both lower and upper-division students, including first-year and transfer students, you’ll help shape their academic journeys from admission to graduation.

Your expertise will contribute to their successful recruitment, retention, and academic progression.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Student Advising : Provide individualized and group advising sessions to assist students with course selection, educational goal clarification, and the development of personalized academic plans.
  • Student Support : Offer guidance on complex issues, interpret and explain academic policies, and connect students with relevant campus resources.
  • Program Development : Collaborate with campus departments to design and implement academic programming that meets the diverse needs of our student population.
  • Issue Resolution : Mediate and resolve complex student issues, ensuring students receive appropriate referrals to campus resources when necessary.
  • Outreach and Retention : Facilitate the successful recruitment, admission, transition, and retention of students, helping them navigate their academic paths and achieve their educational goals.

Position Information

  • Full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits-eligible, permanent / probationary position.
  • Exempt under FLSA; not eligible for overtime compensation.
  • Standard work hours : Monday - Friday, 8 : 00 a.m. to 4 : 30 p.m. (Occasional afterhours and weekend work).
  • Approved for partial telecommuting with onsite work in San Diego.

Department Summary

The College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) faculty, through advising, teaching, and supervising, offers students a balanced education of academic study, field placement, clinical experiences, and research opportunities.

CHHS consists of the following schools : the School of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, the School of Nursing, the School of Social Work, the School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences, and the School of Public Health.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field.

Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown below may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Possession of the required knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field;

experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Key Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years experience as an academic advisor in higher education.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
  • Demonstrates experience presenting information to a group.
  • Demonstrates experience analyzing data to determine trends related to retention and graduation rates.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Experience providing outreach services to students, specifically first-generation college students is preferred.
  • Familiar with higher education and graduation requirements is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,841 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range : $4,841 - $6,884 per month.
