HJF is seeking an Oncology Dietitian to support the Clinical Nutrition Services at the John P. Murtha Cancer Center (MCC) located at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland.
The incumbent will be the primary Dietitian for the Murtha Cancer Center and subject matter expert on oncology nutrition for the Military Treatment Facility (MTF).

Its comprehensive core of military and civilian oncologists and other cancer-trained clinicians and researchers provide multidisciplinary cancer-care delivery and patient-family support services.

Responsibilities
- Serves as a primary resource and subject matter expert to hospital staff regarding oncology nutrition. Coordinates the education of staff, students, patients and their significant others on the medical nutrition therapy plan.
- Develops and manages Nutrition Risk Screening for all clinics treating outpatients at the Murtha Cancer Center.
- Makes a complete nutrition assessment on each referred patient, assessing weight changes, calculating desirable body weight, protein, calories and other nutrient needs, and intervenes with individualized medical nutrition therapy using evidence-based therapy to improve, maintain or optimize nutritional status during and following treatment.
- Personalizes nutrition recommendations and education to maximize nutrition intake and quality of life.
- Coordinates nutrition therapy with physicians, nurses and other health care providers within the interdisciplinary team.
- Calculates enteral feeding requirements for patients receiving nasogastric or percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube feedings and coordinates with patient, physician, and case manager regarding recommendation, feeding education and supplies.
- Provides regular follow-up with oncology patients throughout treatment process in accordance with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetic (AND) Oncology Evidence-Based Nutrition Practice Guidelines and the National Cancer Institute Guidelines.
- Conducts patient education on an individual basis and through group classes. Teaches dietary principles to all age groups, including pediatric and geriatric.
- Participates with interdisciplinary team. Collaborates with physicians and other health care providers regarding patient management relative to nutritional needs and status.
- Participates in Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs and training in the Murtha Cancer Center. Serves as a Preceptor for dietetic interns enrolled in the U.
S. Military-Baylor University Master's Program in Nutrition.
- Develops, reviews, and appropriately updates policies, protocols, standards of dietetic practice regarding oncology nutrition.
- May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor.
QualificationsEducation and Experience
- Master's Degree in Nutrition required.
- Minimum of 3-5 years experience required.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Experience with Nutrition Risk Screening.
- Experience working with oncology patients throughout treatment process.
Licenses and Certifications
- Registered Dietician with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
- Must be a Board-Certified Specialist in Oncology Nutrition or be able to obtain certification within 1 year of employment.
Work Environment
This position will take place primarily in a clinical setting.
Security Requirements : U.S. Citizenship required, ability to obtain and maintain a T3 secret clearance.
