Advertising Copy The College of Education and Social Services at the University of Vermont invites nominations and applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track position in Human Development and Family Science (HDFS) beginning in Fall 2025, at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.

We seek someone motivated by the opportunity to contribute to the HDFS program’s mission to "prepare knowledgeable, skilled, critically conscious, and ethical human services professionals and citizens.

We are especially interested in applicants whose scholarship and teaching integrate human development and family science with social justice principles.

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake an active program of research that leads to publication in peer-reviewed scholarly outlets and, where available, to seek extramural funding for that research;

to demonstrate excellence in undergraduate teaching and advising; and to contribute to academic and professional service activities.

The Department The Human Development and Family Science (HDFS) program is situated within the Department of Counseling, Human Development, and Family Science.

The HDFS program is currently a vibrant undergraduate program that aims to prepare graduates for promoting positive development and healthy relationships;

empowering individuals, families, and communities to thrive; and interrupting systems of privilege and oppression via strengths-based and critically conscious approaches.

The Community UVM is located in Burlington, Vermont, which is rated as one of the best small cities in the country. The greater Burlington area has an increasingly diverse population of about 125,000 and enjoys a panoramic setting on the shores of Lake Champlain, between the Green Mountains of Vermont and the Adirondack Mountains of New York State.

The surrounding area provides an environment rich in cultural, civic, and recreational activities. Vermont has a deep history of social activism and political participation.

It offers many opportunities for collaborative partnerships in community and state-wide human service and social change organizations in multiple fields of practice, including state agencies.

Responsibilities : The successful candidate at the Assistant / Associate level will assume a range of responsibilities that include :

  • Maintaining an active research program, including publication in peer-reviewed journals and applications for extramural funding;
  • Demonstrating excellence in undergraduate teaching and advising in the HDFS program, with the possibility to advise graduate students with relevant research interests from other programs;
  • Contributing to service activities within the program, department, college, university, and profession;
  • For the associate professor position, demonstrating a record of publication and external grant funding commensurate with rank and sufficient for tenure at UVM.

Qualifications :

  • Doctoral degree in Human Development and Family Sciences or a closely related discipline;
  • Demonstration of commitment to principles of social justice and promotion of diversity in all its forms;
  • Record of publication commensurate with rank and, for the Associate Professor position, sufficient for tenure at UVM;
  • For the Associate Professor position, a record of external grant funding commensurate with rank and sufficient for tenure at UVM;
  • Evidence of teaching excellence at the undergraduate level;
  • Strong collegial, communication, and collaborative teamwork skills.
