General Statement
Under direction, participates in the analysis, development, modification, installation, backup, testing and maintenance of operating systems software and storage.

- Delivers information technology consulting services to departments within the District.
- Assists in the planning and development of computer systems within a department.
- Supports operations of a virtualized environment.
- Directs the implementation and maintenance of computer systems.
- Prepares contract and purchase specifications for departmental computer hardware and software purchases.
- Manages specific departmental systems including identification, diagnosis, and resolution of day-to-day hardware and software operational problems.
- Manages security and backup of computer systems as required.
- Reviews departmental computer requests; prepares annual departmental computer budgets, cost justifications and supporting reports.
- Represents department on various ad hoc and standing committees.
- Manages the implementation and maintenance of departmental computer networks including providing access to various authorized databases.
- Participates in the ongoing training and development of subordinate information technology staff.
- Evaluates vendor-supplied software packages and makes recommendations to IT management.
- Modifies, installs and prepares technical documentation for system software applications.
- Modifies, installs and prepares technical documentation for storage management software and hardware.
- Modifies, installs and prepares technical documentation for backup and recovery systems to meet high availability and mission-critical business needs.
- Diagnoses, isolates and de-bugs software and hardware problems.
Other Job Functions
- Participates in research, evaluation and implementation of prototypes of new products and services.
- Provides after hours and weekend support when required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Environmental Conditions
Work is performed in a typical office environment and requires the use of standard office equipment including computers.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of the operating characteristics, capabilities and limitations of software including operating systems, programming languages, application software, utility software, proprietary programming products and database management systems.
- Considerable knowledge of the operating characteristics, capabilities and limitations of computer hardware systems including peripherals and storage hardware.
- Ability to analyze information technology problems and issues and to recommend effective short- and long-term solutions.
- Ability to work effectively with other information technology personnel, user groups, vendors, and consultants.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Graduation from a four-year accredited college or university majoring in information technology, computer science or a closely related field and four years of experience in the installation, configuration and maintenance of operating systems.
Substitution
Graduate study in the designated fields may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of two years.
Full-time paid experience in the installation, configuration and maintenance of operating systems may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Promotional Requirement
- Two years of service with the District as a Systems Analyst or an IT Support Coordinator.
- Civil service status in one of the foregoing classifications.
