Position Summary

Reporting to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Vice Provost and Chief of Staff for Academic Affairs serves as a thought leader and partner to the Provost and administrator of the Division of Academic Affairs.

Because academic affairs, faculty life, and student learning lie at the heart of the Spelman College ecosystem as well as influence and impact of Spelman’s partnerships and alliances, the Vice Provost and Chief of Staff for Academic Affairs is a necessary senior member of the Provost’s leadership team and plays a central role in safeguarding and advancing the college’s mission.

  • The Vice Provost and Chief of Staff for Academic Affairs will partner with the Provost to advance strategic initiatives;
  • oversee faculty affairs; create and refine policies that enhance faculty relations; promote sustainability and innovation;

foster a culture of equity, honesty, transparency, and inclusion; and position the Office of the Provost for maximum impact and effectiveness, aligning it with Spelman’s mission and strategic initiatives.

The Vice Provost and Chief of Staff for Academic Affairs will appreciate, understand, and be committed to the value of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, women’s colleges, especially regarding women of the African Diaspora, and the value of a liberal arts education.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Advance strategic initiatives.

  • Serves as a key member of the Academic Affairs Senior Leadership Team with responsibility for key strategic initiatives in the Office of the Provost.
  • Provides leadership and strategic vision in support of strategic priorities, particularly regarding faculty recruitment, retention, and advancement, with a data-oriented, metric, and evidence-oriented approach.
  • Develops and executes strategic academic plans and initiatives that align with the institution’s mission and strategic goals, promoting academic excellence and innovation.

Works with the Provost to develop clear, compelling academic aspirations.

Oversees faculty affairs and faculty related processes.

  • Oversees major units within the Office of the Provost and the Division of Academic Affairs.
  • Creates and refines policies that enhance faculty relations.
  • Oversees the protocol and policies related to faculty and staff recruitment, retention, and advancement at all levels within the Division of Academic Affairs.

Promotes sustainability and innovation through partnerships and alliances.

Supports daily operations related to the Division of Academic Affairs, including serving as a point person for Office of the Provost in communications to the faculty.

Fosters a culture of equity, honesty, transparency, and inclusion; and position the Office of the Provost for maximum impact and effectiveness, aligning it with Spelman’s mission and strategic initiatives.

  • Updates and facilitates policy- and data-orientation in the Office of the Provost.
  • Collaborates with Human Resources and college-based leadership to address concerns related to faculty and staff conflict, grievances, performance improvement, and behavior in compliance with college policy, applicable laws, and regulations.
  • Works across the college to develop, review, and revise college policies related to Academic Affairs.
  • Oversees daily operations of the Office of the Provost with senior managers and department leaders, and perform administrative tasks such as managing calendars, generating correspondence, maintaining hard copies and electronic files, planning, and coordinating annual corporate meetings, and scheduling facilities.

Performs tasks and duties as assigned by the Provost.

Other Responsibilities

  • Serves as liaison with staff, executives, senior leaders, and Provost regarding College climate, faculty and staff employee well-being, project updates, proposals, and planning.
  • Develops and builds on relationships with all employees for increased efficiency and responsiveness of existing operations and help define new operational strategies by working with the Provost and other institutional leaders and faculty on special projects.
  • Serves as a subject-matter expert, handling inquiries, developing action plans, and assisting with preparation and dissemination of communications.
  • Prepares briefings and responses to meetings, presentations, and requests made to the Office of the Provost and assists and communicates with executives in decision-making, program management, and initiative implementation.
  • Acts as Title III Activity Director.
  • Reviews, designs, and executes improvements to organizational structure; find knowledge and skills gaps and helps address them.
  • Improves current processes and optimizes organizational procedures for efficiency and productivity.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D., Ed.D., or relevant terminal academic degree from an accredited institution.
  • Ten or more years of progressive experience in higher education, with five of them in an intermediate or senior level administrative role.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working in a highly collaborative and transparent manner in partnership with academic and administrative leaders through participatory management, shared governance, and teamwork.
  • Demonstrated success managing complex operational projects and strategic initiatives involving diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and effective organizational communication with diverse audiences.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement, tact, discretion, and integrity with sensitive and confidential information.
  • Skill and comfort with data and its use in tracking and communicating success as well as to identify, uncover, and remedy inequitable policies and practices.
  • Experience in organizing and directing multiple teams and departments.
  • Experience in planning and leading strategic initiatives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Versatile abilities and extreme dedication to efficient productivity.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Rank of full professor, with tenure.
  • Demonstrated significant academic leadership and experience with undergraduate curriculum, program review, and assessment of student learning, and management of the undergraduate education process.
  • Demonstrated capacity for influential leadership with a proven record of accomplishment of innovation, creativity, and best practices.

Ability to problem solve and adapt to and initiate change.

  • Experience related to programmatic budget oversight.
  • Experience with strategic and intentional budget management, planning, forecasting, and allocations.
  • Engagement with and connection to national initiatives and trends related to undergraduate education, student success, high-impact practices, assessment of learning, and curriculum.
  • Familiarity with and commitment to liberal arts education / HBCUs / women’s colleges and its purpose.

Certifications, Licenses, Restrictions

Project Management Professional certification preferred.
