Key Responsibilities :
- Responsible for developing students' success in academics, interpersonal skills and activities of daily living; supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas;
- developing lesson plans and delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines;
collaborating with other teachers, other professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and / or classroom issues.
- Instructs students for the purpose of improving their success in academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills through a defined course of study.
- Administers developmental testing programs, subject specific assessments, etc. for the purpose of assessing student competency levels and / or developing individual educational plans (IEPs)
- Adapts classroom work, after collaborating with other teachers in full inclusion classrooms, for the purpose of providing students with instructional materials that address individualized learning plans within established lesson plans.
- Demonstrates methods required to perform classroom and / or subject specific assignments for the purpose of providing an effective program that addresses individual student requirements.
- Assesses student progress towards objectives, expectations, and / or goals (e.g. behavioral, motor development and communication skills, academic needs, vocational abilities, etc.
for the purpose of providing feedback to students, foster parents, and administration.
- Counsels students for the purpose of improving performance, health status, problem solving techniques and a variety of personal issues.
- Collaborates and communicates with instructional staff, other school personnel, foster parents, administrators, and a variety of community resources for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes, achieving established classroom objectives in support of the school's mission.
- Prepares a variety of written materials (e.g. adaptive materials, grades, attendance, anecdotal records, behavior logs, etc.
for the purpose of documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirements.
- Responsible for preventing client abuse by adhering to all policies and procedures, attending periodic training, reporting suspicious and inappropriate behavior, and following mandatory abuse reporting requirements.
- Reports incidents (e.g. problematic behavior, abusive behavior, runaway risk) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment, and adhering to state and federal laws.
Other Duties Include :
- Maintain a high standard of role model behavior for youth.
- Participate in training and development activities as required.
- Report any acts, incidents or conditions that reflect the possibility of inappropriate youth-to-youth or staff-to-youth relationships.
- Report any use of physical force and all unusual incidents per guidelines.
- Perform other duties as assigned or needed.
Requirements :
- Education : Bachelor’s degree in education required. Master’s degree preferred. Special Education certification preferred.
- Experience : Minimum of 3 years' prior relevant teaching experience working with children with developmental and intellectual and / or physical disabilities preferred;
any equivalent experience.
- Skills : Must be able to successfully complete initial and ongoing training & certification in Universal Precautions, First Aid, CPR & Restraint Training.
- The Special Education Teacher is required to maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops;
reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
Physical Demands : Ability to lift / move up to 20 pounds and provide necessary physical services to clients. Must be free of communicable diseases as defined by the state and to the extent that knowledge is attainable under the law.
Must be able to transport clients.
Other : Must maintain an appropriate and valid state driver’s license. Must meet state criminal background check requirements.
