Civil Project Manager (rail, transportation, etc.)
Hanson Professional Services Inc. seeks a candidate to fill a full-time civil project manager position in our Seattle, WA office.

Position Profile
As a project manager, you will work with multidisciplinary teams to plan, oversee, guide, and mentor staff and interface with clients to produce and execute the various deliverables required as part of our civil practice and in support of other Hanson markets.
- The ideal candidate will be familiar with civil design plans and standards (railway, stormwater, utilities), and related disciplines.
- Typical responsibilities include possessing practical project accounting knowledge and producing high-quality deliverables (reports, plans, specifications, cost estimates) within budget.
- Projects may include planning, design or construction of : expansion or reconfiguration of existing railroad mainlines and sidings;
new or replacement bridges; expansion, reconfiguration or maintenance of facilities including intermodal, transload, auto lots, hump yards, logistics centers, and related assets.
This role will function equally effectively in both client-facing and internal-facing circumstances.
A Day in the Life of a Project Manager
- Day-to-day tasks in civil engineering design / analysis and plans / construction contract documents.
- Author technical documents such as engineering reports, specifications, and special provisions.
- Prepare and review complex engineering calculations.
- Perform construction administration duties, including submittal review, evaluating construction progress for compliance with contract documents, and directing engineering support personnel and sub-consultants.
- Work with local government and Class I rail clients to deliver projects.
- Develop scope and staff hours for related tasks.
- Attend and / or facilitate meetings with current and future clients.
- Conduct site investigations, including determining problems, identifying alternative solutions, and providing recommendations.
- Interact with clients to discuss existing and future projects.
- Interface with leadership to assess performance.
- Prepare responses to proposal requests, attend project pursuit interviews, and other related marketing activities for business development.
- Other duties as assigned.
Essential skillsets
Technical Skills :
- Clear understanding of railway design applications and software including MicroStation.
- Experience as engineer of record on civil studies and design projects.
- Experience working with municipalities; experience interacting with other peer disciplines, including but not limited to roadways, mechanical, electrical, and structural.
Soft Skills :
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts verbally, visually and in writing to engineers, clients, and public stakeholders.
- Must build effective relationships with internal and external client bases and work with and manage project staff.
- Must be able to work independently and as a team member to problem solve and learn new technical skills.
- Must be able to collaborate remotely with colleagues in other offices.
- Work assignment flexibility, including being available to travel for out-of-town assignments, primarily 2- or 3-day trips or evening attendance of local client meetings.
- Hours worked will vary based on project demands, including occasional, periodic overtime.
Education / Experience :
- A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive engineering experience.
- Possess an active Professional Engineers (PE) license in WA or the ability to obtain it within six (6) months.
- Participation with technical society organizations a plus.
The salary range for this position is $101,000 - $166,000 annually.
