Orientation Assistants work to make a newcomer non-English speaking student feel more comfortable in the new school environment. Orientation Assistants may translate for the teacher, explain classroom rules / policies to students and parents, help facilitate conversation between the classroom teacher and parents and help the new student to better understand and navigate the school system.

Candidates should understand and speak clearly and distinctly in English and the desired language (Q'anjob'al); listen to English and speak in the desired language simultaneously; listen to English or the desired language for several paragraphs and repeat the information accurately back to the listening audience; Maintain confidentiality and impartiality; Work effectively with District personnel and the public. Qualifications also include : graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency. Two years of experience providing simultaneous and consecutive oral interpretations.

This is an on-call position with assignments varying in length. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS : The successful candidate must subscribe to an Oath of Allegiance, submit to a general tuberculosis examination, be fingerprinted, complete a pre-placement physical examination, and show proof of their identity and right to work in the United States as conditions of employment.

CERTIFICATION : When a vacant position is to be filled, the Classified Personnel Director submits to the appointing power the names of the top three "ranks." This is known as "certification," and the appointing power may select any one of the persons certified.

  • ELIGIBILITY LIST : Candidates successfully completing all phases of the application and examination process will be ranked on the appropriate eligibility list according to total examination score.

  • HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN : Employees working 5 hours or more receive family medical coverage, employee life and vision; and employee or family dental coverage.
  • HOLIDAYS : Regular classified employees are entitled to pay for authorized holidays, provided they were in a paid status during any portion of the working day immediately preceding or succeeding the holiday.
  • LONGEVITY PAY : 3.5% increase added to base salary after 10 years, plus 3.5% after completion of 15 years, 4.7% after completion of 20 years, plus 4% every five years thereafter.
  • RETIREMENT : All new employees who work four hours or more must become members of the California Public Employees Retirement System and the Federal Social Security program; contributions are made towards this by both the District and employees.
