Building Inspection Specialist

Inspects construction and alteration of all types of buildings and structures for compliance with building codes, ordinances, and laws. Reads blueprints and plans to determine compliance of contractors in the process of construction.

Essential Functions

• Schedule field inspections of construction in an assigned area;
• Inspect various aspects of buildings under construction to ensure compliance with building codes;
• Interpret building codes and ordinances and explain such to the public and contractors;
• Record inspections and maintain records of inspections made;
• Note violations and / or problems encountered;
• Inspect existing structures to determine compliance with codes and ordinances before issuance of permits;
• Inform property owners, contractors, builders, and supervisors of code violations;
• May issue an order to stop work if compliance is not made;
• Perform final inspections of the construction site for final approval;
• Perform related duties as directed.

Qualifications

Completion of two years of college coursework in engineering, architecture, or a related field with an additional three to six years of experience in construction work; or any combination of relevant education and experience that provides the following :

Valid current drivers license. Achieve certification by a major code group within one year of hire.
