At Houston Methodist the Pharmacy TechnicianSpecialist position serves in an expanded role and is responsiblefor performing advanced level work including but not limited tomedication reconciliation and medication histories verification oforders verification of doses dispensed by other technicians supportof medication acquisition programs to ensure safe patienttransitions during the admitting transfer and discharge medicationacquisition process and assisting with the collection of data forproductivity and quality assessment and may perform TechCheckTech(TCT) as outlined by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP) andHM policy.

This position participates in staff development bytraining new employees residents and interns; provides feedback ontechnicians performance;

and may lead the coordination of thedaytoday workflow and activities of assigned pharmacy technicians.The Pharmacy Technician Specialist position also performs otherspecialized functions in the work areas in addition to performingfunctions normally associated with a Pharmacy Technician or SeniorPharmacy Technician.

PEOPLE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

Promotes apositive work environment and contributes to a dynamic team focusedwork unit that actively helps one another to achieve optimaldepartment results.

Collaborates with other health careprofessionals as needed for problem resolution and / or achievementof identified patient specificgoals.

Guides and mentorsPharmacy Technicians Senior Pharmacy Technicians and students tohelp build confidence in skills knowledge and abilities.

Proactively supports and assists with training new employees andall other pharmacy learners (e.g. residents interns students andvolunteers).

Providesmanagement feedback on techniciansperformance.

SERVICEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Leadsworkgroups and committees as well as develops and implementseducation activities for technical staff. Presents or assistsinservices for pharmacy staff as directed by PharmacyManagement.
  • Assists withoptimizing the safety and efficiency of pharmacy operations andsupporting the workflow needs of the pharmacydepartment.
  • Contributes indepartment efforts to resolve drug related problems and maximizingpatientcare.

QUALITY / SAFETYESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Providessupport to the workflow coordinates medication distribution andacquisition in assigned areas under the supervision of thepharmacist and reports problems to the appropriate parties.

Accurately documents and completes paperwork in assignedrole / function.

  • Performsadvanced activities to ensure efficient and safe medicationdistribution including but not limited to TechCheckTech medicationreconciliations medication histories advanced sterile compoundingtroubleshooting automation and patientinteractions.
  • Reports nearmisses and inputs errors promptly to improve processes and identifytrends. Contributes to identification of corrective actions andimprovement activities and contributes to meeting departmental andhospital targets for quality andsafety.
  • Leads othertechnicians in the collection and reporting of data related toquality improvement and productivity projects to optimize patientsafety

  • Uses resourcesefficiently; does not waste supplies. Recommends solutions inachieving departmental objectives.
  • Selfmotivated toindependently manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks.

  • Participates inplanning developing implementing and monitoring new pharmacyprograms and services that address medication related errors andsafetyinitiatives.
  • Identifiesprocess improvement opportunities in the medication distributionprocess.
  • Seeksopportunities to expand learning beyond baseline competencies witha focus on continual development as a Pharmacy TechnicianSpecialist.

EDUCATION

  • HighSchool diploma or equivalent education (examples include : GEDverification of homeschool equivalency partial or full completionof postsecondary educationetc.)
  • Two years of collegepreferred

WORKEXPERIENCE

  • Four years ofPharmacy Technician experience applicable to the specific worksetting (e.g. hospital specialty pharmacy); may consider a HMSenior Pharmacy Technician with one year lessexperience
  • Cross trainedin three pharmacy work areas examples include but are not limitedto medication histories advanced sterile compounding TechCheckTechPyxis coordinator etc.

OR serves as a subject matter expert (SME)for a pharmacy work area in which 50 percent or more of work timeis conducted and demonstrated by completion of an approvedcertificate program such as Accreditation Council of PharmacyEducation (ACPE) Board of Pharmacy Technician Specialties (BPTS)American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) PharmacyTechnician Certification Board (PTCB) Texas Society of HealthSystem Pharmacist (TSHP) etc.*

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONSREQUIRED

  • LPHT LicensedPharmacy Tech State Registration OR
  • RPI Reg Pharmacy InternState Licensure AND
  • IVCertification Intravenous certification (ACPE) if applicable forprimary work assignment within 90 days

KNOWLEDGE SKILLSAND ABILITIES

  • Demonstratesthe skills and competencies necessary to safely perform theassigned job determined through ongoing skills competencyassessments and performanceevaluations
  • Sufficientproficiency in speaking reading and writing the English languagenecessary to perform the essential functions of this job especiallywith regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety orsecurity
  • Ability toeffectively communicate with patients physicians family members andcoworkers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus andapplication of positive languageprinciples
  • Proficient inperforming accurate calculations required for usual dosagedeterminations
  • Possessesproficient computer knowledge; operates multiple computer systemsto include hospital / pharmacy related software drug preparationpumps / devices packaging and labeling machines automated drugdispensing equipment prescription balances and portable dataprocessing units
  • Exhibitsstrong interpersonal and team player skills with all levels of thehealthcare team and assures delivery of excellent customer serviceto all patients visitors physicians andcoworkers
  • Capable ofassuming responsibility for coordinating the activities of othertechnicians
  • Adapts tomultiple ongoing priorities with minimal supervision includingorganizing work flow and actively participating inproblemsolving
  • Maintainsactive credentialing for TechCheckTech if performing thoseduties
